Default 6.2 and 6.5 blocks

Hi all, I was wondering if anyone new if the 6.5 block is the same as the 6.2 block and if so what makes the 6.5 ?

I think the precombustion chambers are slightly larger in the 6.5L head. Besides that the only major difference that I know of is injector angle, and turbo of course.

the only time a 6.2 and a 6.5 had the same block were for 2 years. I think 1993 and 1994 or 1994 and 1995. i read it in diesel power a few issues back. i would try at their website for details. beside that i dont know what the differences are

the newer the 6.5 block the better....6.2's have a bad problem with breaking the mains out of them.......they do sell a girdle for the 6.2 though......

True they are very much the same. and yes the newer the block the better. There is a company thats make completely new shortblocks for the 6.5 with all the weaknesses out of them.

Where do they sell that?!?!?! ive been looking for a girdle...

Thanks for all replys, I guess i understand a 86 6.2 will not swap to a 95 6.5 with proper parts from the 6.5

i am going to do a swap i have a 92 with a blown 6.5 i am going to try to put a 6.2 in i also would like to put the 6.5 turbo on but told intakes are diff any help would be great thanks tow pro 570 [riz]

the intakes are different and the oil pans are also the 6.5 has a big 1 piece rear main oil seal and the 6.2 has a 2 piece and the pans are not interchangeable i hope this helps

or you can build a 6.2 bottom with 6.5 stuff on top, depending what you want to do with it determines how much extra effort/cost you want on the build, My 6.5 is 200+, rwhp & 400+ rwtq and pulls 18K load on occasion, but have done a lot to get there. While not huge numbers to what other engines can do considering 195 flywheel rating from factory 200+ at rear wheel is significant gain. Good buddy of mine with his 6.5 holds the 6.5 world speed record at Bonneville 153+ mph.o properly set up a 6.5 can and does deliver the goods, as far less cost than one might imagine, spare parts are plentiful, due to poor care and feeding they earned a poor reputation, so you can get complete truck with thousands of $$$ of great parts for including good engine & trans for less that what you pay for boneyard salvage engine on considers as "THE" engines for power.

I'm on more sites than you can shake a stick at same handle on all of them, PM me here for more info on tricks & tips for the 6.5.

2 precups for the 6.5 L56 (S VIN) engine is emission has smaller, & close to 6.2s, L65 (F VIN digit 8) is non EGR more fuel & hp from factory has larger cup,
6.2s capable of 24-26 mpg driven conservatively,

13-20 L56 and 3:73 rear depending on speed & load,

L65 10-18 avg with 4:10 rear depending on load/speed

AMG makes the premier 6.5 on the market today will only sell long block but not cheap, has beefier blocks to counter weakness of earlier design.

Peninsular, is top of line for remans, couple of other folks sell a quality reman, if the cost seems low/reasonable on one you find on the net, high probability it has knock off china made parts, not all china stuff is bad, but the variation between good-modertate-bad chinese parts is huge, you had better have a personal relatioship with the retailer of the reman engine to make they will stand behind the bad part that may fall into your lap or their build.

Remember many places buy cheap as they can to keep cost low, culled or inferior parts are in abundance, even in ou US military Mil-Spec. parts supply chains we see that issue from time to time, just as word of caution buyer beware.
