Typical signs of a bad PMD:
Engine is working fine and a sudden loss of power, and then a serge of power
Unsteady Idle speed
Engine gets to operating temp and suddenly dies, won't start until cooled off some
Cranks and no start and absolutely no smoke from exhaust while cranking

Best bet would be to remote mount it as soon as possible, the heat changes by the pump is what breaks these things. Better to prevent the problem than try to fix the problem. Most people relocate their behind the bumper somewhere. Mine is behind the grill in front of the radiator so on some colder mornings when I get to operating temp and hit a stop light, the heat will get on it and I'll have sketchy starts until I get going again. Again, don't wait for it to go bad, fix the problem before it happens.

Thanks I plan on fixing it anyway just gotta get the $ because if I'm not mistaken I have to buy a mew pmd to do the relocation right? If so its gonna take awhile for me to get the money to do it

Does he have Toyota floormats? Sounds familiar. I wonder why nobody didn't just turn the key off, seems like it would do the trick.

Anywho, I don't think it makes a difference on what color it is, maybe if one is cheaper, unless it is a considerable difference probably go with the cheaper kit. I don't think that you need to get a new PMD unless yours is already bad. I think all you need is the extension cords they make for them and remove the one you got and just plug and chug, not really sure, I bought mine with the relocation already done, I just don't know how you'd be able to do plug it into the pump without removing the one that one there, and if its good why get a new one.

Well I've been doing a lot of research and everything I've read says people normally just leave the factory one where it is and just buy a new one (idk how the can do this either) and as far as color the grey one is the newer version GM came out with for these 6.5s and the black one is older but I've read the black is better and I've also read the grey is better so I really don't know

With that logic, I think the grey would be better, I don't know why GM would try to "fix" the problem by making a lower quality product. Maybe its that the grey ones are better insulated so they can be put directly on the pump without failing. But just buying a new one to replace something that got broken without fixing the "real problem" seems like a waste of money to me. Honestly, I think the relocation is the best option, might take a little more effort initially, but seems like the permanent fix for that problem. Might be worth talking to the parts people at a GM dealership to see what the difference between the black and grey PMDs is. I'm just assuming that the grey is better insulated, but as far as function go, they should be the same quality.

I think mine is the black one and is located behind the grill, no problems with the PMD, just had a wire split on the extension lines.
