Hey all, I'm looking at a 96 tahoe with the 6.5 in it and know nothing about these motors. Anybody have any advice for looking at/driving this thing before a purchase? I'm a cummins guy and this would be a runaround vehicle for me. I've heard great things about these motors, just don't know what to look for or if I should just walk away. Thanks in advance.

Ask when the injection pump was last replaced and if pmd is relocated but more importantly have him start the engine and u stand by exhaust if there is excessivr smoke for more than 3 seconds could b bad unless its just cold outside. While engine is running open oil cap if decent amount of white smome puffs out or looks real sludgy on bottom of cap. also feel the top radiator hose as engine is running keep pinching hose until engine gets warm if hose gets hard yo squeeze before engine temp. also take of intake filter tube via big clamp and c if the turbo wheel moves excessively. if any of these things are present run! take your time dont want one tht someons abused and when u get it it takes a **** on you ...then the 6.5 leaves a bad taste in ur mouth bc of someobe elses stupidity to take care of it..good luck .

Sry for mistyping im using my phone just make sure radiator hose doesent get hard to squeeze before engine is up to temp..if it gets hard when engine is still cold could have cracked heads block or head gasket

Thanks for the timely reply guys. I found that thread on diesel place a few hours after I posted this. No joke, it almost scared me a little bit! But, compared to my 06 everything's cheaper to replace as far as injectors and glow plugs go(quarters on the dollar). He didn't know if the PMD relocate was done so I'm guessing no, and everything else was original. On the upside, not much towing, just puttin around so I don't think it's been hammered on. Goin to look on wednesday, I'll know more then. Thanks again guys!
