There is no good one all purpose. I f it's good for self defense it's to small for huntin. A great little carry/self defense gun is a glock .40cal or 9mm small frame. Will fit smaller hands well, hides easy, light weight and completely dependable every time.

For huntin, it could be about anything. Go to the local shooting range and have her try em all out.

Or better yet, don't ever let the wife have a gun or even teach her how to use them. Odds are pretty good that at some point in yer life it's gonna be you she's lookin through the sights at.

380's are great for personal defense. They are easily concealed, very accurate, and very inexpensive to buy and maintain. You're not going to find a good all around weapon to use practically for defense and hog hunting. Glock's are great for defense but not easily concealed and a bit more difficult to pull out and fire accurately on the fly.

9mm is far cheaper for ammo but a .40 hit's harder and penetrates better, that's why most law enforcement started out with 9mm and have since changed over to the 40cal's. Now if the millitary would wake up and get rid of the 9's. Why they felt the need to go from the 45's to a 9mm I'll never understand. Holds a few more rounds but it takes hittin the target with all those rounds to knock em down.

NATO...

TEXASPOWER,

Take her to a gun shop with a wide selection and let her choose what fits her hand the best....a gun she can aim and is comfortable for her to hang on to is the first step.

Then see what calibers are available.....for a self defense weapon anything will work, even a .22 or .25

The bigger the round heavier the gun, and generally the recoil will be more harsh, unless you're comparing say a 9mm auto to a 357 SIG or some other extreme high pressure load.

She'll be more protected with a .22 that fits her hand and she shoots well over a .45 that she has trouble holding a good sight picture on and even more nervous to pull the trigger.

There are hundreds of options out there---I can give my favorites but truthfully you gotta go handle a bunch to see what she actually likes.

For caliber, I'd stick with a 9mm, unless she wants something uber-compact. 9mm's are cheap to shoot, relatively mild on recoil, muzzle flash, muzzle flip, and noise, and that translates into an easier and cheaper time learning to get really good with it.

If she's a good hand with a gun and can handle some power get her something chambered in 357 SIG....a very fun, loud, flamethrower of a handgun that with the correct load closes in on 357 Magnum charts. A bit harsh, though.
