Actually, I did 4 years worth of Ju-Jitsu. Which is one of the Grandfathers of Martial Arts - comprised mainly of Karate, Judo, and Aikido. I was about to do my Black Belt Test when I screwed up my knee, I didnt go back to it but wish I did.
This is a great thing to get into....especially for kids. If you are considering doing this - make sure you check out the credentials of whoever is going to be teaching you. I would insist that they have at LEAST 5 years of teaching experience and plan on doing it long term - by that I mean that it takes 3+ years to get to a point where you could use it in a life and death situation. i've thought about it over the years myself. there's a place near me that supposedly has a pretty good reputation for teaching kung fu. i heard kung fu focuses more on mind control but don't know if that's true or not. thought it'd help me do a better job of controlling my temper and focusing my thoughts. doc, what do you think?

Try it Johnny...you might like it. Go down and watch a class - they might even let you try out a session. Check this out: http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/forum/index.php
At first, its more of a self defence thing, but after you really get into it...the self defence aspect is only part of the reason that you do it. I can speak for Kung Fu because I am not real familiar with it but it will teach you self control, patience, humility, respect etc. Check it out. Last edited by Dr. Evil; 08-07-2007 at 01:29 PM.. |

that's kind of what i was hoping for. i could care less about fighting. had enough of that in the "good" ol' days. very interested in what it could teach me as far as self-control, strength, etc.
scarecrow, what are you thinking about trying? Last edited by Johnny Cetane; 08-07-2007 at 01:20 PM.. |

i studied Tae Kwon Do for about 4 years. became a 1st degree Black Belt, Instructor Trainee and then the dude wanted to pay me $5 a class after i worked for him for 6 months for free..... i gave him the big
and went about my merry way. when i'm in good health and i feel like getting my ass tore up by a 4th degree black belt i'll catch up with him and train for a few hours and then have a non-stop 1 hour sparring session.
