Default New Savage 93 .17HMR

Well I walked into our local outdoor store Monday night, and the salesman asked me what I was looking for... I told him something for varmint, even though I really didn't intend to purchase one. He hands me a Marlin .17HMR, nice rifle, but it had iron sights, not exactly what I would need for killing woodchucks, muskrat, fox, and coyote. So then he hands me a Savage 93, stainless barrel and synthetic stock, now we're talking. Ask him what kind of package deal he could give me on the gun, a scope, mounts, sighting it in, and a couple boxes of ammo. Well, we crunch the numbers, and he's looking to make a few bucks before he goes home.

Walked out (after the Fed's checked me out of course) with a model 93, Bushnell 3x-9x scope (don't remember the model), 1 extra magazine, mounts, and 2 boxes of ammo (one of the 17gr 2550fps accutips, one of the 20gr 2300fps standard rounds) bore sighted and all for $360, and that includes tax. I was a happy camper. Now I just gotta get some firing time in! Haven't had a chance yet with the weather so shitty, and by the time I'm out of work its dark. Looks like this weekend I'll be at it. Anyone have any tips on firing this thing? Ammo suggestions?

I'm thinking a bipod might be in order too.

Um, not too expensive... I mean, its not as cheap as 22LR, but then again what is besides pellets.

Hornady ammo is $13.99 for a case of 50 rounds. I've heard the Hornady stuff is the best you can buy.

And you don't think that is EXPENSIVE !!! I can get a box of 22 mag which has 50 rounds for less than $7.25 !!! A box of 9mm, 50 rounds $8.99 a box of 45acp, 50 rounds $14.99

the 17 hmr has a tendency to start flipping at 100 yrds. shoot at a target and you will see it hit side ways. it is a hard hitting light round. I am a 22-250 man myself

22-250 is a whole different round, packing way more of a punch than a .17HMR. However the .17HMR beats the snot out of the 22 Magnum. And I've seen a buddy drop a good sized fox from 175-200 yards with a head shot. I guess it depends on the rounds you're shooting.

Gunman, ammo here is a lot more expensive, thanks to big brother and NY state. .45ACP is about $25 for comparable ammo, more for premium stuff. Sure you could get the cheap stuff, but you can get cheap .17HMR for about $8 for 50 rounds.

I have pretty much the same savage in the blued barrel and wood stock. Love it. I blew a gopher in half from 150+ yards one day. Surprised the sh-- out of me. I'm not a great shot.

Well sure you will... But then you gotta pay shipping fees, so unless I buy it in huge quantities at a time I really won't save anything. I checked out gunbroker, I'm on there pretty often, they don't have ammo any cheaper than here in NY.
