Default international 4700 NO POWER!

i just bought a 96 international 4700 with what looks to be a powerstroke and a 6 speed eaton fuller. im wondering why it is so gutless. feels like there is a ton of lag. it just winds up slower than ****. i beleive 2500 is where it stops which to me seems kind of low but it takes forever to get to 2500. is this normal? if it is or isnt, what can i do to change it? is there any way to get some more power out of it? its a rollback so i dont want to go crazy but it is seriously gutless. i put a new fuel filter in it and im gonna throw a boost guage in it soon. any input would be great thanks

Just thinking out loud, but if you have no boost or the computer thinks you have no boost then it will be totally gutless. Somewhere lurking under the hood is a small "vaccum" line going to a boost sensor. If there is a problem with that line or the sensor the computer won't think it has any boost and wont add fuel. Another option is a blown charge air cooler boot or serious leak. Start at the turbo and check the boot there, follow hose to CAC and check it, then on to the other side and back to the motor. Somewhere along the way you may be loosing your boost. Have you changed the oil? They sure don't like high mileage oil or inferior oil. Air cleaner could be plugged or obstructed. Exhaust could be plugged. Wastegate could be hung open. I have seen a waste gate acuator arm fell off and the gate free to swing around. ...and, one of my favorites is the warm up damper in the turbo exhaust housing could be stuck closed. That is oil operated and harder to check. Easy with one of those $4k OBDII Computers.

i already checked all the lines and couplers and everything is tight and in tip top shape. and prior to this thread i looked and could not find any external wastegate actuator or anything. and im pretty sure there isnt a warmup brake either. i would hook up my 4000 dollar obdII computer nut i cant find a data port. the only thing i found was a round plug that had like 4 pins in it. so im still not too sure what to do. i will change the oil and put a boost guage on it. that should tell me a lil more. do you have anymore ideas?

Last time i was involved in hooking up a computer to a 4700 the plug was under the dash on the drivers side somewhere in the neighborhood of the area above the kick panel. It required an adapter as it wasn't really an OBDII plug. I've only worked on one powerstroke in a 4700 and it was to change out a bad injector. I didn't pay attention to see if it had a "normal" powerstroke turbo with a wastegate actuator. Maybe another expert will chime in.

I would have expected about 22 psi of boost. Sounds like a lack of fuel or a leak. Drivers side exhaust manifolds were bad to crack and leak.

i looked and didnt see anything but the the exhaust is broken under the cab so i could hear a leak if my life depended on it. i ordered some exhaust for it so once i get that on i should be able to hear something. thanks for all your help.

Hey there i have a 2001 4700 with the t444e. does yours have the 444? . On mine the comm port is where the vent would be on a old chev truck. in front of the door facing the pass side about a foot off the ground. I connected a welfare guage up to mine and i topped out at 23 psi. mine has 110,000 km on it and gets delo 400 every 9000km. I think these guys are on the right track. like air filter compressor wheel condition and play. How many kms on it? I dont have the exhaust back pressure valve thing on mine. Which i was pissed off about cause i wanted to make a brake, and i dont think you do. But the wastegate arm would be smart to check. Mine you can never move with your hand. My power comes on real stong at 2000 thenfalls off quick at about 3000. when the turbo spools and the powerband is coming on its like a 2-stroke 80cc dirtbike. I did the 10k mod technically. i used a 10k potentiometer and turn it up until idle is affected then turn it down a hair. it make a world of diff. Our engines dont have the same fuel regulator positioning so i havent found it yet but i want to shim the spring a little bit then i think im done. my truck with 3500lbs of pump, washer, burner, chemicals, and a 600 gallon water tank and I can keep up to anyone in town and dont loose too much speed up hills. still pass most of those big rigs fully loaded.

yes mine is a t444e also.what is a welfare guage and what does it do? my truck has 150,000 miles on it. i dont have an exhaust back pressure valve either. i also dont have a waist gate. im lucky to get 15 psi. my truck completely stops accelerating at 2500 rpm's. boost starts building slowly at like 1800 rpm's i think. also what is a potentiometer and what does it do? my fpr is pertty much a part of the fuel bowl and filter set up. it used a pair of vise grips and completely crimped off the fuel return line and it made absolutely no difference. thanks
