Default International Paystar 5000 PDL

Here's a good one for y'all. We have a whatever year Int. Paystar 5000 at the mine we use to repump the explosives. The Power Divider Lock (PDL) does not work, but the head truck operator swears it does. He says it kicks itself out in tough terrain so as not to break an axle or whatever. Now we all know that pretty much defeats the purpose of the PDL. I know it doesn't work because when you get the rear tires off the ground when going over bad stuff the rear tires spin free, and you stop forward motion. The truck also has FR and RR lockers. My question is how do you go about fixing something like this? I don't have any idea what to look for on a heavy duty duel axle truck. You can flip the lever in the cab and hear air release when it's turned off from on, but it just does not work. Help me out so I can prove the stupid guy wrong.

not 100% sure but it should be actuated by air and you should be able to flip the switch and here the locker engage......check power to the solnoid and air supply it....don't quote me I could be wrong

Make sure the air line going to the Power divider in the front rear is connected and not leaking. Sounds obvious but I see this all the time at work. Then try taking a rubber tiped blow gun to the fitting and see if you can hear the Power divider engaging. There are no relays to check, it should be a supply line right off the switch all the way to the front rear.

The Power divider will only transfer some of the engine torque between axels. It will use both differentials in other words. It doesn't neccassarily lock the two axles in. Any of the 4 drive wheels will turn. rather than only one of the 2 on the rear axle. The lockers (the cups on the side of the differentials with the airline) will lock in so both wheels on the axle will turn at the same time.

I understand. The problem is neither of the front wheels will turn under power, even with the front rear and rear rear lockers engaged. I would think then that all four tires should turn under normal conditions. Many times I have got the rear tires of the ground on uneven terrain and the fronts won't do anything.

Never thought of it, but that could be the issue.

its possible also that the power divider itself has come apart. the spiders in the power divider shattered.
