Default DT466 - Bosch PES6P, Starting Problem

I have a '95 International 4900 with a DT466 (250hp) and the PES6P Bosch Pump. What has happened is that in order to start the truck I had to back the idle screw on the throttle linkage all the way out, and prior to cranking it over you have to first back the throttle stop all the way out then reset it to an idle position. It doesn't matter if you use the manual shut off or if the engine stalls, you still have to back the throttle off all the way then bring it back to an idle position. If you don't the engine will crank and crank without firing. By adding Ether when cranking, it will eventually take off. Otherwise it runs great

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance... -

You mean it's like you have to hold your foot on the pedal to start it? Is that the direction you're turning the idle screw? If so, it's likely sucking in air. Common on this age of trucks. The rubber hoses behind the pump get brittle & crack. We have 2 1994's and they both did it.
You got the holy grail of DT466's. Congrats. -

work trux: 94 IH 4900, DT466-P-pump, #0 plate, 2 clicks on gov springs, and a bit of timing(the one on youtube).
06 IH 7400, 300hp DT466E, no BOMBS yet, but it does ok.

Actually you have to release the throttle completely (by pushing the in-cab throttle stop completely in) then reseting the throttle to a position that will let the truck idle (by pulling the in-cab throttle stop out about 1.5")

I had to back off the idle screw on the pump so that you can kill the engine by pushing the in-cab throttle stop all the way in. If I don't have the idle screw backed off so you can do this, I'll never be able to start it up. It's like the rack has to move completely to the rear and then to a run position before it will supply fuel....

Which cracked hoses are you talking about?

I think IH sells em(the low pressure hoses) as a package, so you can just change em all from the lift pump to the injector pump. The one we had go bad was the long one right next to the block. Sounds kinda strange. Is the fuel shutoff moving all the way? Full open to full closed.

Gonna do some BOMBing when it gets running right? -

Finally spoke with a Bosch Technician and was told that the pump isn't going into "Start Fuel Position" He had me put a couple clicks on the governor springs and it now starts fine. Apparently the governor springs must have weakend to the point that the weights were flying out just a fraction too much while the engine was being cranked.

Now we know... -

Perfect reason to crank up the power! Tighten up the springs a couple more clicks, and slide the fuel plate forward. -

I have tighten up the springs, and moved both the aneroid and fuel plate forward. This winter I'll grind the fuel plate, advance the timing and straight pipe it.

I started a post asking what kind of numbers I could expect to make: Potential HP from a DT466

Thanks -
