I've had Dish and have Direct Tv. Personally, I like Dish better, but that is because I had it long enough I knew the channel lineup, the remote was basically part of my hand.

I'm still learning Directv and they are cheaper (for me) anyway.

I'd compare both packages side by side and see what each provides you in the channel lineup.

I have Dish for 9+ years. Only had Direct for 6 months. I got Direct Tv through my telephone provider via a triple play pack.

Either can be cheaper than the other depending on the promo package you look at.

Compare the channel line up. That will probably decide it for you. -

It depends on if you are going to go HD. Direct has a ton of HD channels already. Dish has far less.

Dish Network HD receivers are better but you have to run 2 coax cables in each room if you are going to run a Dual Tuner (2 rooms on the same tuner). There is a downfall to having dual tuners because you can only watch 1 program in each room and record only 1 additional at the same time. If you pause live TV with you can skip forward much easier on these receivers. In order to get Pay per view you have to have a phone line installed into the TV otherwise you cannot purchase movies. Same goes for Movies on Demand.

Direct TV charges $5.99 per HD receiver even if you buy them yourself at Best Buy or somewhere else. They do not have dual tuners so every room can watch its own program and you can record another one at the same time. They have better programming packages for Pay per view, you also do not have to have a telephone cable hooked up for them, unless you want caller id to show up on your TV. You can only get the NFL ticket on Direct TV.

I have Direct and have for about 2 years, I am not overly impressed with them. I had decided to switch back to Dish but the reasons I stated above made me stay with Direct. The service is sketchy at best, their support is in the US so that helps alot.

On Edit:

I remember this thread now. Direct TV when I mentioned that Dish was coming out to install all new, well they showed up and would not run the wiring to my man cave meaning I would not have HDDVR in there so I decided to stay with Direct. -

I've had Direct for about 5 years, other then when a storm comes I have not had any problems with Direct. I actually just switched to At&t Uverse, waiting for them to come and hook it up. I can get every channel they have and all the movie channels cheaper then I can with Direct. And what I like the best no contract. It all comes through the fiber optic phone line. -

x2 for what the wife said here Bubba.. We love our DirecTV.. we have had both, and like Directv much more.. But its like Chad said.. They are virtually the same, go look at each menu setup in an electronics store, and check each channel lineup. If you aint worried about HD, they are about the same, just have different feel to them.

I've had DirecTV for about 18 months, and the clarity is AMAZING in HD, but the service is fair, at best (on the phone). If you get the right installer (most often, you don't) you will be paying for it in the end.

RANT: We had ours installed for HD and the installer did not put in the correct "barrel rolls" for HD service. We couldn't figure out why our HD was pretty poor on certain channels (pixelating) 6 months later, a different installer came out and told us that the HD receiver we got was not set up properly, so we were only getting 5 of the 30 channels we were supposed to get. 18 months into the 24 month contract, we still do not have HD service on the local channels (DirecTV blames the local channels, the local channels blame DirecTV) I call them about once a month each because we just want to watch football in HD. It has been nearly 2 seasons now, and I was promised it last year, which is why I bought the service in the first place.

To discuss someone else's post above, we were just "given" new HD receivers for all of our rooms last week when they came out and discovered that the reason we weren't getting proper HD signal was that our HD receiver was recalled 4 YEARS AGO. We are not being charged any longer for HD service, and we have it in 4 rooms, needless to say.

I'm not sure if this helps anybody's decisions. All I know is that unless you are dedicated to watching TV, all this crap is a waste of money. Get yourself an outdoor antenna for free and watch "How I met Your Mother" and "Two and a half Men".

Just my $0.02

Thanks for all the advice here. Were not lookin for much more then just basic packages for us. I don't watch any sports anymore and the HD picture is nice but were just not that die hard that it matters. Biggest thing were lookin for is the RFD-TV. When there's nothin else on to watch I can always turn it on for somethin to stare at. Right now with cable we get over 100 channels and 80 percent of the time I can't even find anything worthy of even just starring at. How many hours has this TV just sat on the CNN or weather channel repeating the same stuff over and over. -

I like direct better than dish. More channels for less. The HD issue comes down to if your local channels are in HD then you can get them in HD if they are not in HD you have to get permission from them to get a different feed of the network that is in HD. Most local stations will not agree to this. Local here in redding they will not allow you to get a different feed. -
