Best way to filter used engine oil?
I'm looking for some experienced person to advise me on what the best way to filter used engine oil. I'd like to get it down to 1 micron.
Will a 1 mic filter bag do the trick? How much pressure will the bags tolerate, if no filter housing is used? How many gallons of oil can typically be filtered before the filter stops up?

Multi-Stage Multi-Pass
I use a dual filter multi-pass setup where I circulate 4 gallons of oil through this setup for an hour or more at a time any number of times until I'm ready to use it. I mix it with fuel to lube the pumps and injectors. Have maybe $150 in it including the pump, filters, tank, hose, fittings, etc:

I think it comes out pretty darn clean for used oil. The filters lasted almost three years and filtered probably about 25 gallons of oil before I had to change them last fall. You should have seen the big globs of sludge that drained out from the large Fleetguard cannister when I did the filter change.

ROI will vary depending on several things-
initial cost of filter setup
fuel mileage
miles driven
cost of pump fuel
cost of alt. fuel(if any)
the cost of replacing your fuel system or engine also negates the cost of a cheeep( or even expensive, if it doesnt work) filter system.
anymore a dieselcraft type CF can be had for less than a tank of fuel($140 or less) all you need from there is a pump and some fittings. some peeps may have everything laying around, some will need to purchase parts and assemble, others would be best off buying a turnkey kit.
if all you want is to turn your used oil into fuel after you drain it, a dbl canister filter type rig as stated above is probably your best bang for the buck.(4-5 gal/ 5000miles)
if you have a lot of oil and mebbe access to veggy, then a CF will pay for itself in filters that you dont have to buy.
