Default C.R. turbo an upgrade for 1st gen?

Hey guys, ive got an '03 S.O. and a '92. Been thinkin about upgrading my charger on the '03 and was wondering if the turbo would fit on my '92. I know its positioned differently so the exhaust and intercooler piping would need to be changed. Would this be a good upgrade for the '92?

the 03's i believe have electronic waste gates and that would be the only downfall to doing the swap, if it stayed closed it wouldnt be a problem you would just have to watch your boost guage

I've read about some people trying it. From what I gather it is a OK upgrade for a stockish truck. I'll dee if I can find anything else out on it.

The 03 CR turbo is a HE341 and is a 54/58/9 turbo.
The 04.5 and up is a HE351 and measures 60/60/9

I think the turbo has 2 studs on the top that you will have to drill out the holes on teh manifold to mount it.

it should be good to support 350 HP on a 1st gen. Not a whole lot of info out there. The exhaust might get a tad tricky on you also. The best thing I can tell you is go pop the hood on your truck. Set teh 3rd gen turbo on the valve covers and stare at it for a while. Think about all the possible issues you can run into. If it looks like it should work do it! ou can always go back to stock!!!

I'm running the HE341 now. It's not bad. Spool up is excellent, EGT's are manageable. I was towing my 5000 lb fifth wheel camper to Billings on a flat surface at 70 and was at 800* (preturbo), which I think is decent. I may of had a tailwind though... I have gotten toasty (1350*) hauling same trailer up an extended 6% grade, but I had it in OD by accident.

It whistles a little less than a H1C with the 60 mm compressor upgrade.

If you have a totally stock turbo and can do your own fab work, AND don't want to make past 300-350 whp, this turbo would be a good choice, IMO.

There is not much demand for them, so they are pretty cheap. I got mine for $225 shipped. If you upgrade the H1C, you're going to spend almost that much on the compressor upgrade alone, and then you would still be stuck with a 18.5 or 21 cm exhaust housing.

Hope that helps.

It does ok.

Would this be a good turbo to use with a twin setup on 1st gen.?(he351) If so what would be a good big turbo to use with it for 450-500 and possibly later 14mm head and cam plate?

Yes they use the HE351 for twins on 3rd GEN's. No reason not to use it on a 1st GEN. The 3rd GEN owners have made well over 500hp with just the HE351. Would like to see what it would do as a set of twins with a 475 on the bottom. If both would do 600/650 on fuel, that would be great. Lloyd Mills and I were talking late last year about twin piping. He said he had a company that was doing mandrel bent kits for $1200 out the door. Thats cheap. Not everyone can/has the talent to do their own piping. When I replaced my HE341 on my 04 to a HE351, I zip tied the waste gate hose shut. 42psi max boost. 600deg on the hiway at 78mph. Never got over 1100deg. Fueled with a Smarty on REVO. No smoke unless I wanted to dog it, then it would black out the sun. Not much point in that. Clean burning setup... Hope this helps you...

I just upgraded to an HE351. Haven't got to drive it yet though.

FWIW, I thought the HE341 had a 3.5" outlet, but I was wrong, my DP bolted right up to the 351.
