Ok so a co-worker was asking me about what would the best exhaust brake for his truck. Has an 07 5.9 auto. Only mods are Airdog 100, S&B intake, and Edge Juice w/ Attitude. I told him Pac Brake would probably be his best choice. Now, I am almost finished with my VGT swap on my 24v and I was thinking if it would be a cheaper solution to swap on a he351ve to his truck instead of spending the close to 2k to get a exhaust brake installed on his truck? The Fleece controller for the VGTs only goes up to 05 so is there something in the 06-07 trucks that makes is to where you dont need the controller? Or is it not even possible on these trucks? He tows alot and isnt going to go above the mods he has now.

 

I just put a Pacbrake PRXB direct mount on my '07 and can't say enough good about it. Got it from Thoroughbred Diesel (they are a sponsor here) on an eBay offer action. I won't mention how much I paid in the interest of fair competition, except to say it was way below list price. I already had onboard air, so the cost was to be fair, significantly less and less work to install than starting from scratch.

There are 2 things that really amaze me about this brake. I have a older Pac on the 1st Gen and I drove a buddy's 6.7 just a couple weeks ago to see what it felt like before I decided on the PRXB Pac. Control relay integration to the ECU is seamless, easy and it works perfectly. No separate controller required (for the '06-'07 5.9s), plug in 2 wires and it's good to go, simple as that. Also, the holding power and lower rpm range it reaches down to for effective braking is noticeably more than the stocker.

PRXB gets my vote all day.

 

Well how did the PacBrake compare to the 6.7? Im just wondering if its possible to swap the HE351ve onto a 07 5.9.

 

Anything's possible, it's just a matter of time and money. My guess is the difference probably has to do with how the VGT controller software integrates with he transmission controls, not sure. The "V" in VGT stands for variable, so there is something going on there, dunno. The Pac is a simple on-off switch/butterfly, triggered by the ECM signal it receives. It is more aggressive (throttle off = full-on exbrake) and held effective braking further down in the rpm range.

 

Im finishing the VGT swap onto my 24v and the Fleece controller im using works up to the 05 CR. There is no controller for the 06-07 5.9 so Im trying to figure out if the 351ve is a simple plug and play on these trucks. I like how my 6.7 slows itself down. Im sure its not as aggresive as the PacBrake but with downshifting and the exhaust brake on, I rarley touch my brakes to stop.
