| 5.9L 24V Bombs (Aftermarket) Discussion of 24 Valve 5.9 Liter Dodge Cummins Diesels with VP44 Injection Pumps Related To Performance And Longevity |
So now that everything else is replaced in the front end the only thing left is the steering box itself. Can anybody tell me what the options are that are available for our trucks. Don't need any high performance ready to run the Baja 500 ... JOIN NOW TO REMOVE TRACER

Don't need any high performance ready to run the Baja 500 with, just make it go straight down the road and easier to turn. -

That's my next step and I hope it helps but I know this steering box is gonna go at some point to. It's worlds better now that the new front end is done but the steering is still stiff and the crown in the road still tends to grab the wheel more then i like. -

PSC, and AGR make boxes for our trucks, you can get a HD version which I guess has GM parts in it
, haha. Or you could just go to Napa and buy a rebuild kit and do it yourself, or spend the extra cash and swap your old one for a new rebuilt one. Last time I checked around here, the rebuild kit was about $40 cheaper than the rebuilt box after you returned the core, $40 is a cheap rebuild IMO, and I'll let the Napa machinist do it for me for that price. - |

I looked at PSC and couldn't find any real info to figure out price ranges and what all parts were needed, so if anybody can elaborate a little on either PSC or AGR. -

With the core charge knocked off they are only $330 in the end. High dollar but if they work as stated a good investment. I'm pondering the new Gear and a new OE replacement pump also jut to make sure everything is good. So under $500 for a complete new system.
As compared to a Gear from Dodge that is $485 not including the core charge. I haven't called NAPA to see what they get for theres yet. What does bother me with the PSC's though is that they are rebuilds. Don't know if I like that idea but I guess it's workin for them. - |

Try finding a box that isn't rebuilt... Nobody is gonna cast their own housings, and without a "New" housing, it'll always be considered rebuilt. I've never seen a power steering box crack from normal driving. Now if your gonna rail the thing against rocks everyday, then it might crack, but so would a new one. I did see a guy crack one from drilling holes poorly for a hydraulic assist, but that was his own fault.
I know AGR offers a quicker ratio box that I might go with, but I haven't been able to find it for a while. - |

I did research on top of research back a couple years ago when I was a TDR member. I came away with PSC as the "bomb-diggity" box. I've got the DSS, I've got the DT Trackbar, I've got new ball joints and a fresh alignment, and I've had my undercar shop that I trust with my life checkout everything else under there.... I've still got wander. They say a steering box is all that's left to cure it. I suppose I'll go after a PSC whenever I can save up the $$'s. That's just my .02. -

Checked on NAPA's price online last night and they are only about $220 for the gear and another $100 or so for the pump with a fluid resevoir and filter. Think I'm goin that route unless somebody knows somethin more about the NAPA stuff I don't. - |

Seems like a good enough deal. I generally trust NAPA. Lemme know how it turns out. -

You all just keep costin me more and more money.
Ok, here's the new line of thinkin after all the discussions on different steering boxes. Since I have the RanchHand bumper hangin off the front end along with the Rickson 19.5 inch wheels and tires I'm thinkin about the enhanced version of the PSC steering gear. (SG-841MX) '94-'02 Dodge Steering Gear Light Valving [SG-841MX] - $446.50 : PSC Motorsports, Off-Road Steering ExpertsIt's only a few dollars more and hopefully would save some wear and tear on my old arm and shoulder. This truck is a stick so I drive with the left hand all the time and this truck has made that shoulder bad cause it steers so hard. The question I still have is would this be to much gear and make the truck squirlly to drive. I know it's either gonna be this gear or the PSC standard replacement. Down the road I will also replace the pump and the shaft but I can't afford all of it at once. Gonna be a struggle to get the gear right now. Timing couldn't be worse. Gettin ready to start haulin in over $4G worth a hay to get the year started. This is why I need this truck rollin right now cause I'm havin to travel for hay this years. It's gonna be about a 90 mile round trip with a 40 foot gooseneck at about 28000 pounds on the return trip with trailer and hay included. - |
