Cummins 6sp manual noise
I just got back from Texas with my new truck. Its a 2003 cummins 6speed manual. When i take off and lug my truck the transmission growls or chatters but as soon as i give it more throttle and speed up it goes away and is great but this noise is annoying. I talked to a diesel guy and he said its nothing to worry about at this time. Any feed back would be great i would love to know what its coming from.

Quick thought. It could possibly be a aftermarket clutch, such as a Valair or Southbend dual disk which will cause chatter at times. You may want to check with previous owner as to any upgrades he/she has done. I have an 2005 that I have owned since she was brand new. I could hear a little chatter every once in awhile but, I can hear it more now due to the dual disk I put in it. Hope you enjoy the new buy!!!

A heavy duty clutch, single or dual can cause a low rpm growl, and or noise in the transmission when your foot is off the clutch and idling, and it usually goes away when you up the rpm's a bit. Anything that can cause your diesel to produce more spike, like a bad fca valve, missfiring injector etc... will cause the noise to be louder. In most cases it is not doing any damage and is reconized as the nature of the beast. Welcome to the world of diesels.
