you can use baking soda, it will neutralize the acid. if you mix an acid, and a base it will neutralize each other. baking soda is cheap and effective, you can throw it on as a powder and it will stick to the acid, then mix up a baking soda and water solution to spray on and wash it all away.

i had one explode on a piece of machinery i was working on. i was leaning over it just before it went leaned back and hit the key to see if it would crank yet and "boom" had to take a baking soda bath . not too fun. i have pics of the battery somewhere if i find them i will post them up for ya.
usually happens when the battery is about to die. the hydrogen gas builds up during charging and discharging and if the connection is a little weak it could spark and make a huge mess .
