Default Engine Noise

I have a 2007 3500 Dodge dually 5.9 there is a noise in the engine that sounds like spark knocking on a gasser. Is there anyone who knows what the problem is or has the same thing? I can hear it when I have been driving for a while with no trailer but if i put a load on it I can hear it right away. I have no complaints about performance it runs fine but the noise is driving me nuts.

The truck is stock and has 185,000 miles. I service it every 5000 miles with rotella and napa fuel and oil filters. The truck runs fine and pulls my 35 foot camper with no problems. The noise is just disturbing and if it is a problem I would want to tke care of it asap. A couple of months ago I thought I read something on DB about the same thing going on with a members 5.9. I thought it was under the 2 stroke oil debate and that the noise could be the injector pump from not getting enough lube with the new fuel. I went back last night and tried to find the thread but could not find it. I was hoping that someone else has had the same noise and found what it was and could point me in the right direction. I only use pilot truckstop fuel in it with no additives.

Rotella is part of the problem, I would suggest an oil change now with Mobil Delvac or Valvoline Premium Blue. Get a bottle of Lucas Engine Break-In Additive and throw taht in the oil change. Don't use any additives in the CR that usually leads to bad things down the road.

When was the last time the overhead was ran on this engine? We had an 05 that had a ticking that wouldn't go away unless it was fresh oil and then would come back after about a week. Never found out what it was but the more miles the engine got it would change pitch. Is the truck smoking at all at idle? Can you get a video of the truck so some things can be heard and it would be easier to tell if you have a nozzle breaking or not?

It does not smoke at all. I drove tractor trailer over the road for years and never had any problem with Rotella but I can try something different and see what happens. I have asked a couple of mechanics about the over head and they told me that on this engine it does not need to be done that it is electronic. Thanks for the reply and I will try the oil change and the lucas and see if that changes anything. I cannot hear it at Idle only after the truck has been run in gear for a while or as soon as I start pulling the camper. Even if you rev it up in park I cannot hear it.

They overhead is NOT ran electronically, I know Common Rails are supposed to have the overhead ran every 100,000 miles.

Rotella is no longer the cheapest(money wise) oil on the market and no longer has the zinc benefit it once did. I can usually run the higher quality Mobil or Valvoline for less money and we try to always put a bottle of the Engine Break-In Additive in every oil cahnge as it is the only way to LEGALLY add zinc to the oil that they took out due to the new European requirements of no zinc.

your oil has nothing to do with any rattle, or noise. rottela is fine. it could either need the rack to be run, or possible the fca starting to go bad.

Rotella breaks down faster than other oils. Ask the Ford guys about that(yes i know its the HPOP that kills it). As far as a rack being run, are you referring to the a rack in a P7100?
