5.9 Liter CR Dodge Cummins 03-07 Discussion of 5.9 Liter Dodge Cummins Diesels with Common Rail Injection

My truck is leaking about a half of a cup of a rusty oily substance, that looks to be coming from somewhere behind the belt pulleys or fan. I am guessing it is the water pump going south? -... JOIN NOW TO REMOVE TRACER

Yes, probably the weap hole in the waterpump is going out. No big deal really, the walk in price at NAPA was about $70 if I remember right. I always change mine out about every 50,000-60,000 miles -

Are they tough to change in 3rd gens. My 94 was pretty simple but there was lot more to mess around in there. Just curious, I'm sure the day is coming -

Drain the radiator, remove the belt, two bolts and out she comes. Or if you want to make more room, remove the fan and shroud. -

They are not bad to change at all. Took me about 30-45 min and that was only about 15min of work time -

Might just want to drain it below the water pump. No real need to drain all the coolant. -

Just changed mine 2 weeks ago and the pump was $49 from napa and thats a new pump not a remaned. Doesn't take long to change and the nasty rust color is the corrosion of the coolant and the rust on the block. I also have a friend thats a cummins mechanice at dodge and he also say the pink coolant or the orange is fine to use. -

Remove the bolt at the top passenger-side "corner" of the radiator shroud...it collapses like an accordian and makes removing the water pump a lot easier. It will provide all the room you need.

I replaced mine "on the road" (in Fayetteville, NC), at about 175k...took longer to drain the rad and clean up the mess than it did to pull the pump. I used an autozone deal, but they DO NOT list the correct pump in their database (they list the pump for a 454 GM, not a Cummins)...make sure you have the part number if you go that route.

I also bought another as a spare, because I have heard the non-OE replacements tend to fail prematurely...25k later, mine is still fine. -
