Default School Me On 3rd Gens

OK so I'm truck shopping the big three.

What do I need to know about the 3rd gens?

Is the steering any better?

Are the auto trans better?

Do you still go through front wheel bearings every 80K?

When did they get the 5spd auto?

Do they rust out like the 2nd gens do?

Fill me in kids.

Marginally. You still should look at DSS and others to solve the issues.

I wouldn't think so from what I've seen.

Is the steering any better?Eh, stabilizers are still good ideas

Are the auto trans better?Maybe it's just the more power part, but dad's 04 can bark second if you drive it right

Do you still go through front wheel bearings every 80K?wouldn't know

When did they get the 5spd auto?No five speed auto, the 6.7L gets a 6spd

Do they rust out like the 2nd gens do?Not if you clean it off after salty winters. Paint is also better

I'd check for fuel in the oil, just pull the dipstick and smell. If you buy one pre-bombed, I wouldn't buy one with a pressure adding box. The common rail injectors have been known to crack when you crank up the injection pressure. Other than that, full steam ahead.

I'm finding some good deals on 3rd gens. some nice one owner trucks. I don't think I'll buy one if it's bombed unless it's just exhaust, BHAF and gauges. That's it.

When do I have to worry about fuel supply with a CR?

Bigger injectors, programmers and chips. If you keep your foot out of it or if your not towing, fuel supply can keep up with them.

To be safe, go ahead and get gauges (with fuel pressure) first. And like Wildbill said, once you start using more, you need more. But stock pumps can go out.

what year of 3rd gen are you looking at? unless you have a smarty box stay away from the 2003 because there are 48 different ECM versions and none of them work as well as they claim. the smarty fixes that problem though.

Well I drove the 3rd gen last night. It was OK. I don't know how big a fan I am of the interior and I decided that I will never own a bright red truck. Just ain't for me.

Here's an odd question. This thing was an 06 Q/C, auto, 4x4. It supposedly has never had a box, programmer, etc on it but they guy did put gauges on it. He had it all hooked up correctly. But heading down an entrance ramp I got after it and that thing hit 1200* REALLY fast and climbed a little past. There wasn't any smoke out of the pipe to speak of. Is this normal?

On a bone stock truck? No that isn't normal. Either he has a modified turbo, big (or non stock injectors) or some other problem like lack of air.

Tough to say.

Did you cycle the key to see if there were any codes?

No. By the time I got this far I knew I wasn't real interested in it. I was just curious about it getting so hot. Like I said there wasn't any smoke and the turbo looked stock as far as I could tell.

Or could the air cleaner be dirty. Mine is pretty dirty right now and my egt's climb pretty fast. I also notice that it bogs a little off the line compared to when it is clean.
