Default truck will not start once warm, help please

Hi, i have a first gen 12v dodge and im looking at buying a 24valve to use for daily driving and towing. I found a good deal on one but the guy says that when the truck is cold it fires right up but once it is warm it will not start back up once its shut off. He believes it has a bad vp44. I am hoping someone can help me figure out why it does this and how to fix/much it is to fix the problem before i commit to buying it. Thank you db. This forum is awesome!

That's consistent with a bad or weak pump. When they get hot the clearances open up and allow too much fuel to leak past during cranking. Maybe request a price quote for a pump from the site sponsors. Course I haven't inspected the truck, it could have other problems

If it is a 2000 or newer you can do the key trick to check for codes. If not find some one with a code reader to check for the pump failure code as well as others. I think Eddie is in the right ballpark with the IP shot. Also, if you can check fuel pressure from the lift pump to the IP that can tell you a lot too.

Thank you for your fast responses.we go up and look at it wednesday. Ill take our code reader with us. We have a 98.5 and a 02. I believe this truck is a 98.5. Ill also check the block to make sure its not a 53 block. It is a auto 4x4 extended cab dually. Any other things i should watch out for or know about? Thankk you

im finally back home with my laptop. sorry for any bad grammer. so the truck is a 98.5. it was used to tow horses for hollywood around the states i guess. by a older man. so all the miles are towing miles. 235,000. body and interior are as clean as can be other than some clear coat damage which we all know is normal. what would be the max you think i should offer to pay for it?

That year is not a very disable year. Not necessarily a bad thing because you can get it for cheaper. I would offer 5k.

not much your looking at 3,000 just for the vp44 and tires..... not to mention if the block cracks 1,500 for a kit to fix it.

i have a 6.5 that does the same thing its more than likely your ip check tje lift pump if that goes out your ip does all the work and after a while weak pump an easy way to to test it is when it wont start poor some water over the ip and wait a couple minutes and if it fires up its the ip thats how my 6.5 is anyway good luck

me and my dad both feel that 2000 is our max cause of its issues and risks, also the passenger side door sags but look to be bolted up tight, so it needs new hinges im guessing. the cab has a dent in the back, famous dodge clear coat fade. so parts wise thats about what i could still get out of it seeing no ones going to buy a 53 block by itself and the pumps no good. and ill have prob 3 grand+ in fixing it so i can drive it
