Default four wheel drive vacuum won't disconnect

So went up in the woods to unstuck a friends power stroke. got it back on the road and my four wheel drive light stays on so I pull over. Transfer case unhooks fine but the axle won't disconnect. So I hit it fiddle gas it reverse it. Nothing. I reversed the vacuum lines did nothing then with the vacuum lines reversed I put it into four wheel drive and it disconnected the collar put it back in 2 wheel. Drove a ways and when I came to a stop it went back into four wheel drive. Had to pop it back into four wheel drive so it would disconnect the collar and put it back in 2 wheel would work for about 10 miles before I would have to pull over and do it again. Any words of advice. Gonna try replacing vacuum lines tomoro in so so shape than if I can't figure it out when taking it apart gonna order a cable lock. thanks
So if my thinking is right my vacuum pulling the actuator to unlock is not working correctly?

That is a good starting point. It could be a problem with one of the lines, or the switch on your transfer case.

It's just not switching I tried and tried it keeps doing different things. Sometimes it switches backwards others it just stays the same but just not working right. But these systems seem to be so prone to failure gonna take it out of the system and replace it with the cable lock instead of having it nickel and dime me plus fail when I need it. Found it for about 130 cheapest I could find shipped.

Cable lock is an easy fix! I like them a whole lot better than the vacuum operated one

Ya all I did was at the search engine type in "dodge differential cable lock" and looked through. The main ones were the Alloy USA which I ordered since there was a big price difference. I also saw posi-lok which looked good too but seemed lots more expensive. I will post a link to the one I bought once I get it and see if I like it or not. But it will be nice to have something I know is going to lock in when I need it. From what I read the 94-01 fits 1500 and 2500 trucks with dana 44 or 60 but says it does not fit 3500s. I don't think I found one at all that says it fits 3500s which is strange since I thought they had the same front axle.

Just a little piece of advice since I'm still waiting on parts and needed my truck. On my truck the vacuum switch is not working right It randomly does what it wants like tries to lock in my axle going down the highway. So to get by I tapped into a tee ran about 5 feet of vacuum line to the disconnect side of the CAD and plugged the two lines going to it. That way it stays disconnected and if I need it just got to swap the line to the connect side. Hopefully my cable gets here soon as the snow is here.
