Default Exhaust Temps

Hey there all. I was wondering what some opinions and facts are about EGT's.

1. Where should the probe go?

2.What is the max temp where if held for longer than a second or two it will do damage?

3.What is the first thing to get hurt if you run too hot?

4. What is the highest temp one may sustain?, as if while pulling a long grade.

5. What temp is it ok to shut off your rig at?

6. What temp do you run at just while driving unloaded at 65?

Not sure if it is right but I put my probe in the manifold just before the turbo closer to #6

Busy thread but thanks for your input.

1. See Pic

2. Anything over 1500-1600 on stock parts.

3. Pistons, rings, head, turbo vanes, all kinds of stuff.

4. No more than 1400.

5. I shut mine off at 350.

6. At 70 no load with smarty on mpg mode I got 700-750.

why do these dodges seem to run so hot? Mine runs 850 - 1050 all the time, ( unless I stand on her, then 1400-1500 easy) yet the powerstroke runs down at 500-550, and I havn't even seen her to 1200 even when I do stand on her...

I would check for loose exhaust manifold bolts and boost leaks. If that doesn't resolve your egts you should consider another charger

On my 94' they are at 650-700 cruising and on my 05' they run 550-600. I agree ^ you need to look into a bigger charger!

baconbits pic was perfect, the rear cylinders run hotter than the front, so you want the probe in the rear runner, right before the turbo...

1600* is a good peak temperature, pulling a grade you want to keep it below 1300 if its a minute or so, most manufacturers say 1250 sustained is max egt. valves and pistons usually melt first.

Well thanks I got the advice from you guy in a post a while back. My egt readings are spot on... And it was super easy.. Unlike when I take the tps, valve cover, intake horn, intake heater , water intake, and intercooler pipes off to paint red!

I agree I have seen boost leaks around the intake pluem that bolts to the head the gasket that seals it will blow out in time. Some are paper and some are metal both leak.

Also on a Powerstroke the EGT probe is well behind the turbo, not in front of it. That will contribute to much cooler temps.
