Default Auto Tranny Question.

Ok guys this truck is my first auto transmission truck Ive ever had. My question is when do I need to change the fluid? I bought the truck from a company I work for. Its in the sig, the fluid is red on the dipstick but it is WAY over the fill line.. Any ideas there? Also how hard is it to drop the pan and do a new filter. Ive heard that its better than a tranz flush. Any pointers would be great! Thanks

Its good thats it is red,but does it smell burnt?

To check the fliud start the truck and put it in "N" this allows the pump to engage then pull the dip stick..Check level

No it is not hard to drop the pan and do the filter.

Parts needed:
ATF+4,Filter,the gasket is reuseable or pick up a new reuseable gasket so you no it is right..Beer for after the job.

The way I do a flush is that I drop the pan replace the filter, clean the pan, fill the trans up with ATF then I take the line from the trans cooler to the transmission and pull it apart at the quick fitting by the cooler and have someone start the engine put it in "N" and watch the dirty fiuld pour out into and pan. Refill transmission and repart until clean fluid is present. This flushes out the converter and VB.

Yes, the old crap-assed cork gaskets.

Get one of the new gaskets for the 48RE and never have another pan leak.

No one likes the cork gaskets... Even with RTV they never seem to work right for me
