i have a 98.5 3500. the truck is leaking oil from the crank case breather on the back of the motor. when i run the truck normally it barely leaks. actualy its a small drip about 16 seconds apart. when im pulling my trailer it dumps out. the other night i went about 400 miles and went through four gallons. a few people said its a broken ring. the only reason i am questioning the thought of a broken ring is the fact that the truck runs perfect. no smoke, no performance loss, nothing out of the ordinary in the drive or idle except the oil dumping out. anyone else experience this? anyone have any suggestions before i have the motor ripped apart?

would it be ok to route that crankcase breather back into the intake? you know, like the gassers do. i realize you would have to go after the grid heaters, or delete them. anyone opinions?

take out a freeze plug and re routre it back into the motor. just read around on here there have been trucks on fire just cause a little oil leak from the turbo so dont mess with the grid heaters. and 4 gall of oil in 400 miles all going into the intake
![]() is there any way you checked your coolent to make sure you dont have a leak back into the motor and causing to much fluid in the motor so its blowing it out?? Im not really 100% sure what it could be with just the info iv heard. but dont run it into your intake

Welcome to Diesel bombers! Thanks for the resurfacing of the asphalt on the interstate!! four gallons is a lot.I would suggest a compression test.

If you have a 24V and the crank case vents anyplace then right down the front of the bock somebody has cutomized somethin or your lookin at the wrong parts here. From the factory the blowby comes out of a round cap about 1 inch deep and approx 3 inches across with a tube comin out the bottom of it right on the front of the timing gear cover behind the fan and drains straight down a tube that is attached to it.
If you went through 4 gallons in that few a miles and this really is oil leaking out of the blowby, odds are pretty good that motor is done and ready for rebuild. If it's got that much pressure it should also be blowin the dipstick out to. |

First thing, I would check would be your vacuum lines. Make sure that they are connected.
If these are cracked or broken, it can cause a lot of crankcase pressure. A compression and leak down test would be the next thing I would do. Good luck. |

Yea i talked to a guy thatworked for cummins and he said that some not many but some of the early 24v had the close cap on the front and the blow of coming out the driver sid rear above the starter and it runs between the starter and the block and thats what i got

Ten years a fightin with these things locally here and on a number of boards and it's the first time I ever heard a that. Doesn't make it impossible to be the truth so who knows.

The only tube in that area that I can think of is the water drain for the fuel filter. But I imagine the OP knows the difference between Diesel Fuel and Oil.
Can you get pictures of this? I would really like to see one of these as I have never seen or heard of one before this. Does this come off one of the side covers? To the OP are you sure it is coming out of the breather? Not like the valve cover maybe or anything else? With the engine running and you hold your hand to the tube can you feel a lot of flow or pressure? If your sure the oil is from the breather tube then I would get a compression test done just to check. |
