crazycooter's Sig:2001 3500 cummins (obviously) 125K on the clock, hell of a steal, but where do you find one of those without a few bugs? Mostly stock for now, but plan to change a few things... new vp44, +50 hp injectors, Amsoil air filter, Amsoil 5w30 series 3000 engine oil.

shift points change a bit at times
torque converter might stay locked when it should release
can go in and out of TC lock up for no reason
truck "feels" sluggish
mileage drops
and what whit wrote above, that's classic APPS failure.

Check the voltage on the APPS if you haven't already. You can adjust it if it's off. It's pretty easy.
Also, check for codes if you're having issues.

APPS will always throw a code... (P0121, P0122, or P0123)

VP44 might throw a code it might not...

don't know if it threw a code or not, and have not road tested her yet, but I am not going to throw my old one away just yet. I went ahead and found one today out at Pueblo Diesel Injection out the door for about $450. I hope I didn't waste my money. I have about 1500 miles that I have to go over the next ten days, so I will find out if that was money well spent. It did seem to make it start easier and not tons of gray smoke on cold startup. I think I am moving in the right direction now, but I am still not convinced that the vp is also a problem. I will add to this when I get back around Thanksgiving.

I will say for sure though that my Cr@ppy running Cummins runs a lot better than my good running powerjoke

Bit of a bummer as you can get an aftermarket APPS for under $200.

yeah, that's a bit more than I spent for mine...gotta love Timbo's APPS! also, if you're worried about it, check your codes by using the key trick...turn the key to the on position, then off, three times. The third time, leave it in the on position, and watch your odometer. IIRC, it should flash PCM, then whatever P codes you have, then wait, and it'll flash ECU (or ECM, can't remember off the top of my head) and whatever codes you have. I think APPS is P0122 or P0121, something along those lines. If you see P0216 though, you've got a dying VP44.

Also I didn't see it mentioned. If your having dead pedal problems try using your cruise control. The Cruise bypasses the APPS and if that is causing your problem you will be able to maintain speed. Pedal still won't work but you can adjust speed using the cruise. If its the VP then the truck should still go into limp mode.

As least it worked on my manual truck. Don't know about an auto. And I feel your pain. The Last time my APPS quit was about 6 months before they came up with that cheap aftermarket solution. I paid $450 also.

For those interested in a DIY That part that seems to fail the most on the APPS is the Idle Validation circuit. The APPS handles this function electronically. It is a rather easy procedure to mount a mechanical microswitch that handles this same function. If I'm not mistaken that is all the Timbo APPS does. Most times the potentiometer section is still good.
