Default 47RE Build Questions

Alright so I'll let everyone know up front i'm new to the diesel community. My new toy is a 98.5 24v, and i'm wanting to build the trans up before I start modding other components. My mechanical history - I've done everything from motor swaps, moderate engine internal work, and things of that nature...Never rebuilt an auto tranny though.

My question is, how difficult is it really to build a 47re at home? Im looking at purchasing the SunCoast M3GA kit, and a 3 disk TC. Please tell me if this is too excessive for my mod plans -

Mod plans -
4" turbo back
Edge Drag Box
S&B Intake
FASS 150
50hp Injectors

Thats about all the mods for the next 3 years or so...

Mods about 3 years from now -
Aurora 4000
150hp Injectors

At the end of the day, my ultimate question is, is it a realistic idea that I could build my trans in the garage and not have to worry about issues, or should I take it to a professional?

P.S. Any recommendations on what I should do to my trans for my immediate mods are certainly welcomed!

Hey there,

Just did mine few months ago...my first as well. Went with GT2 kit, billet input, 15ss triple, and valvebody from Goerend.
Lots of bench space...more the better for me,to lay out parts. you will need a shop press or proper tool for the OD unit.
It went pretty smooth in all honesty, and would do it again in a heartbeat.
The firm shifts, and ability to lock in 2nd and up makes it pull nice...feels like totally different truck.

Looks like you have a good idea where you are going on your mods. Most go in the reverse of your plans. Do you have any gauges at the moment? Best to get a fuel pressure gauge first. If the stock lift pump goes out that VP will die costing a $1000.

Oh and the suncoast kit you are talking about maybe "overkill" but it is good to be stronger than you need to be.

Hey everyone - thanks for the input! Here's an update:

- Installed Fass 150
- Installed S&b intake
- Installed MBRP 4" turbo-back exhaust (decided to go 4" since there really isn't any egt differences between 4 & 5" at my power level, and the cost of a 5" system is almost double that of a 4").
- About to install ISSPRO EV2 Fuel pressure, egt, and boost gauges when I have time this week.
- with the trans stuff I'll be ordering the comp drag box.

I'm still pricing out kits for the trans. There's some folks up in the Dallas area that advertise 4k for a built 47re with billet input, billet triple disk, and a few other typical billet pieces. That's parts and labor. I really don't feel like paying that much for someone else to do it, and I found a mom and pop shop down the road from me that said I can use their press for the OD unit, and their air for testing the clutches.
