Default 01 Cummins - Hard Start / Loss of Power

Hey, Figured I would start a new post seeing how I've got a lot of new parts in her. Problem is sometimes the truck will have a hard start, needing to crank the key 2-3 times before engine will fire. Secondly the truck ALWAYS has no power on start up. I can start the truck and almost exactly same time everytime while driving it loses power. Will gain power back within 1/4 mile. Also, while cruising 45+ it feels like the convertor is locking & unlocking. I've replaced the APPS sensor (Timbo), 110 Injectors & VP44 (DAP), Lift pump (FASS 150). What else could be causing this? I've spent a lot of money trying to get this truck right but still dont trust it 100% to drive daily. Thanks.

i wonder if its losing prime. Changing the overflow valve wouldn't hurt. They aren't very expensive, and can cause a lot of issues. Although you probably did this when you upgraded your vp44 (usually a new one is included with the pump).

I have read that the return line banjo bolt on the back of the head is another common spot but I can't speak to any details of that personally. Supposedly fuel won't leak out, but it will let air back in if it is loose.

I will look for an overflow valve locally. I did some research and found that it seems my FASS is over fueling? If I pull the fuse the truck starts right up. Does this meen my VP is bad or still possible its a prime issue? How much is that overflow & where could I pick one up? What bolt are you talking about on back of the head? Haven't noticed it. Thanks for the input!

i'm not sure what's causing that. Here's a link to an overflow valve, but I bet a new one was put in with your vp44 when you replaced it, (that and all new crush washers on the fittings)

I was guessing it was losing it's prime due to a air leak. If you park downhill ... see if starts normally. I fit does, there is a air leak into the return fuel. usually it's the return line fitting (banjo bolt on at back of cylinder head) loose or leaking. They have those crush washers on them, and sometimes they leak. Any leak can cause hard starting.

What is your psi at idle? During the start up the ecm cuts some of its power to the lift pump so its not pumping full psi while trying to start. Anything over 20 psi is too much. Any fuel coming out the return line when the truck is running?

Randy,

you have purchased from us on ebay a few times. We have a mall flyer, but its best to check our website. The website represents our bigger sellers. We have access to about 200x more parts than what is listed.
