Have you adjusted your 2nd gear band? It is supposed to be checked and or adjusted at every transmission service. Most shops do not even look at when they are doing the trans service. If you want you can adjust it with out taking the pan off. You wont be able to see how loose it is with out removing the pan. If memory serves me right, I think the adjustment is 72 inch pounds then 2 turns out. Consult your service manual just to make sure. I have always adjusted it with the pan off when I am doing the trans service and as such I just adjusted it to feel while pulling on the servo arm.

Here is the bad news. It has been my experience that even if you adjust it and it seems to hold, it will slip when there is any load on it. As such my gut feeling is most likely you will be pulling the transmission for an overhaul.

Just before you start. What does your fluid look like. It is discolored or burnt? Is it milky? If it is milky looking, you could have a radiator heat exchanger leaking. If it is burnt smelling, Most likely you burned up your band or clutch pack.

Condor, could it also be his valve body and one of the valves sticking or not working right. Just a thought. But yea sadly the biggest reason why these trannys fail is because people do not service them correctly. Bands are suppose to be adjusted every time you service it.. Mine got 246K and still goin strong.. Keep us posted and if you could please fill out you signature with your trucks info, and any modification you have made to it, so we all know what ya got and Welcome aboard.

I do not think there is any chance it is a valve hanging up in the valve body.
He is complaining of a slip. If it was not going into 2nd at all I might try and hold on to hope that it is valve but he does have 2nd gear and it is just slipping.

We had a guy bring a 2004 Dodge ram 2500 Diesel into the shop with around 125000 miles on it. Luckily on this job we all covered our *** as this customer was looking for a free transmission from us. On the service drive we noted that his fluid was very dark in color and smelled burnt.
I personally test drove it before hand and it did not slip for me. I only drove it about 2 miles though and I did not hot rod the truck around.
When I performed the trans service I noted that the second gear band was WAY out of adjustment. I grabbed my transmission and showed him. We laughed about it making comments about how most people do not do the service correctly.
I adjusted it and refilled it with fluid. He came back 1 day later with his 40 foot toy hauler hooked up saying it was slipping and that we messed his transmission up and how we need to pay for his transmission. I had witnesses and we told him to kick rocks. The trans needed rebuild.

When you adjust the outside band do not over tighten it passed 72 in lbs. and it's only 1 7/8ths turn out. Just did mine and 1st and 2nd are amazing. But I need a rebuild soon. You'll be able to tell the status of your band by how much you can tighten it in.
