My truck got low on fuel the other day and since then the WIF light keeps coming on and off. The light never stays on very long and some trips it doesn't come on at all. I gave it a shot of Diesel 911 and replaced the fuel filter. The fuel isn't discolored at all and she is running fine. Could it just be the censor taking a dump and if so, where is it located??? If I do have water in the fuel, what's the best way to remove it??? Thanks in advance for the help, fellas!!!

 

Silly question, but have you drained the fuel water seperator on your fuel filter lately? I know not the same thing but at work we have tire pressure monitors added to all of our vehicles and I get complaints all the time saying that the pressure monitor is messed up because it keeps beeping at them. That or they go and disconnect because they do not want to hear the beeping. Usually I go out there and there tires are low or a few times even almost flat.

 

The sensor is in the bottom of your filter housing and theres a drain valve there to drain off the water.

 

Might also consider where you get getting you fuel at. In 11 years of owner ship of my truck I've only seen the WIF light once. Then I figure out the cheap Mom and Pop fuel station had water in the fuel. Now I buy Chevron and high volume fuel and never seen the light every again. I"ve check the water separator a few times and might fine up to 1 ounce of water after 30K miles. But typically there is nothing.

 

Well, Thanks for the help guys. I used to drive big rigs and was only used to the separators with the sight glass on them so needless to say, I found the drain valve and the problem is fixed. I usually buy Sunoco or Exxon fuel because they dominate the market where I live. I've had my truck for a year and a half and this is the first problem I've had, but I won't use the fuel stop where I got that tank from anymore for sure. I drained about 4 oz of water out and hopefully I won't have this issue again. Common sense goes a long way in the world of diesel tho, I should've paid more attention and found the drain valve earlier. Thanks again for the feedback!!!

 

Glad you got it fixed. As far as fuel. Brand is not as important as volume of fuel sold. If you have a station that doesnt sell a lot of fuel, it is more likely to collect water. If you have a station that is always busy, they are constantly refilling there fuel tank. Go with the higher volume sold. I dont worry about brand.
