Default Nv4500 not working

My buddy has a nv4500 with a 500hp cummins, he was towing a gooseneck not sure of weight but uphill and the transmission just stopped! I don't kno if it went click clank or boom, what could be the problem it's only got 5k miles on it, also I have a chance to buy that transmission with a triple disk clutch and all the parts to change my auto to manual, he only wants 800 for all of it due to him purchasing an ats stage 6 rebuild for his auto!!! I'm just curious as to if its worth it and if I could rebuild it for myself, i dont tow a whole lot, just a 16' tandem axle toyhauler prolly 8k and i live in the mountains in va, thanks in advance for any input!

If it won't do anything when you put it in gear it probably broke the input shaft.

With out knowing more details, it could be anything. broke input shaft. fifth gear nut backed off.
These transmissions aren't that bad to rebuild. but you have to have patients. I bought my last replacement gears and rebuild parts from anaheim gear. they were good to deal with and parts were fairly inexpensive.

Again without knowing more of the details. Its a guessing game. The clutch could've broke. highly unlikely, but anythings possible. If it jus broke the input shaft and not the gears. Thats a simple fix. replace the input shaft clean it out real good, metal shaving and etc.

I won't know anything till the rest of his ats kit comes, I'm just curious as to if its worth buying or not because I'm tired of throwing money in my auto and besides I like choosing my own gears

As long as as its not busted real bad. I'd say its worth it. especially if you can do the work yourself.

$800 for a nv4500 with a triple disc defiantly worth it, its not that expensive to rebuild
