if its a 4wd the vehicle speed sensor is going to come from your transfer case. if its a 2wd it comes from the transmission. the vss is only a 2 or 3 wire hookup. odds are either the vss is bad or you have a bad wire somewhere. one wire will be a signal wire too the computer because it was a auto before. the other wire will be the output back to the speedometer. if there is a 3 wire i believe it is a ground
the speedometer and wait to start light are 2 COMPLETELY different circuits (unless its a faulty ECU thats the only way both could go bad at the same time) so you have 2 problems. the wait to start light is a signal from the engine computer on an automatic (i dont remember if it sends 12v or a ground but either way it works one way or the other) the way the wait to start light works all goes through the computer, when the computer determines your grid heaters are shuting off, it sends the power (or ground) to your wait to start light. so you have just a few problems it could be start here: 1)the obvious: check the bulb in the wait to start light 2) check the computer to make sure it is sending a signal from the computer - possibly a bad computer 3)check continuity with a DVM to make sure you have a good wire from the computer to the wait to start light 4)if all of these appear good, you have either a bad computer or something faulty with your warm up sequence. hope it helps. if you need to get more involved in it let me know im pretty good with electrical

you need to find a wiring diagram for it and trace the wires and test the components.

mine had a ground wire from the - side right to the frame like 6 in of wire when i first bought the truck it had not been started in over a year i opened the hood and saw that and said look at this hillbilly shit and riped it off the owner had lost the keys so i hot wired the pump and the starter then drove it home where i started it this way for about a month then put in an aftermarket ignition switch and then found out that the headlights were dim the gauge light were dim and it wouldn't start or run anyhoot i chased my tail on this for 4-5 days and finally figured it out i cant explain why but it works and has for the last 2 years i owned it
