Default Valve Cover

I want to pull them off and clean them up and paint them, do I have to get a new gasket for the value cover once I put it back on?

Supposedly, the gray gaskets are re-useable whereas the black ones are not.

Your mileage will probably vary on either color.

For the best value, you can get some Gladware containers that are just the right size. When you put a big fender washer over the top to spread out the clamp force, you not only have a very inexpensive solution, but a transparent one too. The best value out there!

Haha i've never heard of doing that.

So most likely I would need new gasket's or could I use a make your own gasket deal?

The valve cover gaskets are pretty thick and molded, and lip around both sides of the bottom of the valve cover. I don't think you'd manage to make your own. They do like to leak too.

The gray ones are better, and none of them are too expensive.

I've had the stock gaskets on my 89 off maybe a dozen times. One of them just barly started to leak this last time. I might need to just tighten it up.

Oh and begle... your not right...

why go through the trouble of machining a hole into the expensive glad containers? just spray the top end down with av-gas or other oil free solvent and squirt six piles of RTV silicone on there. flexible sealer will move with the rocker arms.
