Ok all. I have recently (as in today) come across a 1992 Cummins Ext. Cab, long box flat bed. 5 speed Manual with about 300k on the tach. Truck has been used HARD pulled a lot of loads. It still runs pretty good but i have new plans for it, and am looking for input from you guys on goods and bad's of what to put into it. Looking for about a 14 second-ish truck. Here are the plans:
New Crate motor, Industrial Injection with phat shaft turbo
NV 5600 Trans
13" flywheel
South bend Dual Disk Clutch
2nd or 3rd gen leather seats. Heated. Rear custom bench Seat
CM (or similiar) flatbed. w/ BW flip over ball
3rd Gen wheels.
35" tires -to be determined probably Hancook Dynapro ATM's
Repaint stock colors (two tone red and brown)
Blue tooth capable stereo w/ XM
New speakers - 2 10" subs under rear seat

Any reccomendations for axles, interior items etc?
I am looking to do a complete rebuild by end of March. From the pavement to the roof.

Secondary thought.
Should i have the motor rebuilt? fire ringed, new turbo, three pc ex manifold, ARP Studs. Gov springs. New pump... etc. Trying to decide bang for buck. trying to keep this thing done for under 30K.
Will i Need an airdog / Fass?
I used to run a 99 5 spd and am pretty familiar with hopping them up. Not so much on the first gens.

What are your plans with using the truck? HP goals?

I would rebuild the engine myself instead of getting a new engine.

 

Daily Driver. Able to still pull a good load. 700 HP range. looking to be about 15 - 16 second truck. Talking with a local shop they are looking into building a p pumped 12 valve. single turbo dual disk south bend clutch and 6 speed manual trans. only problem is we are hitting about 23 grand. i had asked for industrial injection performance series motor, but they keep going to building their own motor... any thoughts on why? and i have about 4700 worth of body work to get done and i still haven't hit the interior. Thinking about keeping the stock captain seats but getting them reupholsterd. getting rid of tan interior and going black / gray. I have found new carpet for about 200 bucks. i'll get an f150 seat in gray from the junkyard for the back bench seat. plus i need a new flatbed. Thinking the CM Sk series. but that puts me about 5k over budget. Now i know i can sell the stock motor, current flat bed, and stock trans. but not sure if i can make up the 5k delta that i have.

Got the bed yanked off yesterday. now i need to power wash the frame really good and hopefully get it into the shop for the motor.

 

If you are wanting a fast truck I wouldn't use an nv5600. Getting a built auto would be much better in all around use if you are also set on a single large turbo. I'd look into compounds if I were you though. A single turbo with 700hp could get pretty hot towing a load in my opinion.

Also there aren't a lot of available parts left for an nv5600 if you ever had to do a rebuild. If you are set on a 6 speed manual consider a g56.

They keep going to building their own engine because they want your money . Have you considered doing a lot of the engine work yourself?

An he351cw over an ht3b would support around 500hp. I'm not too knowledgeable with compounds so hopefully someone else can chime in with a higher hp setup.

 

I don't know if i need 700 ponies.... I want a respectable truck that can keep with the average guy on the road, be reliable, good mileage, and i can still drag my camper over the pass to go camping, or haul a load of hay etc. I know i'm asking for the perfect truck, but somewhere in all of that is the perfect mix. If it ran somewhere between 15 and 16.5 seconds in the quarter i'd be plenty happy with it.
Who has a reliable motor well built? industrial injection? CPP?

 

I've never looked into buying an already built engine from a company. All I know is you're going to pay through the nose for one.

A 12 valve with a ve pump and around 400 hp is a very good set up in my opinion. With an auto and a well tuned VE engine with compounds you'll be able to get into the 13s.
