Timing question

I was afraid you would say that. I have one that seems to be lacking enough timing advance. IP pushed as far advance as it will go and it is sluggish, smokes and is generally unhappy, but if I turn on the KSB(its on a toggle) it runs great. I guess the front cover needs to come off. Thanks for the input.

If you do it from the front cover, put a new gasket and front main seal and eliminate ONE place for oil leaks..
Does it start easily, just sounds labored?
I'm not too familiar with the 93's, but is there a window on the pump where you can get an alignment mark and check it against the cam pin or something before you take it off again?
Is it possible that there's something wrong in the KSB when you don't have it on manually?

I just did some research on it.. did you replace the IP with a different one? It may have been an older one and they work in reverse (change took place with the addition of the intercooler it sounds like)

I think I have a couple of other gremlins at work. It is loosing the prime after it sits for 10-12 hours and you have to crank it for about 10 seconds to get it started. It has the later model KSB (power turns it on) the truck is a 90 and had the wax motor KSB (power turns it off) hence the toggle to control it. I installed clear lines on the fuel supply and return last night and it has a very small amount of air in the return line. In the process of removing/deleting the fuel heater. I'll let you know what I find. Thanks.

That's a good start for the prime issue, a lot of them will leak at the connecting pins.
As for the timing, I'm not sure about the VE pumps, but P pumps can had different amounts of timing 'built in'.. With the VE I guess it would be a different indexing on the shaft. Not all that likely, but a vague possibility.

Well, I deleted the fuel heater bleed the air out and got it running drove it around a bit. Parked it and took off for the weekend on the bike. It sat for about 50 hours and started right up. Then it sat last night and it didn't want to fire this morning. Back to the old drawing board I guess.
I put the timing question up on the diesel garage forum and one guy said the gear can jump. Tonight I'll try and see if I can see the marks on the gear somehow.
