So I did the conversion on my 93 Dodge with the voltage regulator and now it has a serge in the volt meter. So I took a test light and tested the two terminals on alternator and one has good voltage and the other one flashes. I be leave this is where my surge is coming from any ideas would be great. It seems to charge it just surges my lights. Thanks Hal

 

Assuming you mean you converted to an external voltage regulator, both of my trucks did the voltage bounce when I got them. I did some research on the internet and found the blue mopar voltage regulator supposedly fixes that. It fixed it on one of my trucks and on the other it still does it sometimes, but not always. I'm sure someone else will chime in with a better response. Summit racing's part number for the regulator is DCC-3690731 its 25 odd dollars. A little side note, before I found the blue mopar regulators, I bought one from napa and it was junk before I even put it on, charged at somewhere near 16 volts at an idle .

I am still curious why when I tested the alternator with test light the top post of the alternator that goes to regulator makes my test light flash? Hal....

 

My best answer would be because the voltage regulator controls the output of the alternator, heres a post on another forum with a guy having the same issue.

I guess the other thing you could be seeing is the drop from the grid heaters cycling, but they stop cycling after intake temp comes up or should stop after you reach a certain speed, seems like I remember 20mph but not sure.

 

Well i ordered the voltage regulator from summit yesterday, so when it gets here I will let you know. I just put a different one on and both do the same thing. One of the terminals on the alternator that goes to the regulator and the ignition switch shows it is charging regular and the one that only goes to regulator flashes my test light. It is a real fast flash like the head bouncing up and down. Thanks guys I will let you all know what I come up with. Hal

 

make sure you have good grounds between engine frame and body. would be first thing i check

 

I was putting a amp for my stereo in my truck today and had my son turn my truck on and he told me that it would not turn on. So I went out to the hood where I hooked up my amp and moved some wires and he told me it turned on, so I put a new 50 amp fuse where i found the short and while I was there put a heavier gauge wire from regulator to ignition. This solved my surging of my alternator. It is charging at 14.6 volts.problem solved.....
