Default advancing timing

96 cummins. have engine on tdc and have pinned the pump. how do i advance the timing? i have the snap on timing kit. do i turn the pump or the engine? which way do i turn the engine or pump? i believe the factory timing is 13.5 degrees

You run the motor over until the reading on your gauge shows what timing you want then seperate the gear from the pump and roll the motor back to tdc and re-seat the pump gear.

one trick i realized is to losen nut on gear before seting pump, or it will change when breaking loose, and clean the shaft good or you will do again.

Yes that is a helpful hint. I use ether (spelling?) to clean my shafts.

thanks guys i got it. i used brake cleen and compressed air to dry it off. set it to 17* have the mighty diesel head bolts
