Default Dodge 2500 12v cummins tranny swap

Hi my names is rob im a 21 year old guy who just recently aquired a 96 dodge ram 2500 with teh 12v cummins in it. When i bought it i got the underhand and was told the tranny was mint had my suspiscions but bought anyways thinkg it could be a project truck for the future. So after about 6 months the tranny went and pissed everywhere around the pan. got it home and parked her for good since now its gettting warmer out and i want to start working on this truck and making it run and look awsome. First things first ground level tranny. i have been told that you can swap the old 47re automatic out of the truck and change it over to a nv5600 6 speed. If so what would be the easiest way to go about this and for relativly cheap since money is tight right now would like the trucdk to atleast move so i can see some of its potential. If anybody has any ideas on parts needed fromn the tranny its self to the bolts please help me and instruction would be awsome. thanks for whomever helps out this hopefuylly will help me learn about the inerds of the truck and the componants i wanna beat a viper like the one on you tube. any who thanks for whomever can get me to where i need to be

if you want to beat a viper you have to have a very built auto! But for durability and towing the 6 speed is great. I recomend the 2001 or 2002 or even the newer one2003 and up will work. the best bet is to find somone that has truck so you can pull the tranny, bellhousing, flywheel, shifter, pedals, colum, linkage and transfer case, and even driveshafts. I dont mean to discourage you but a built auto may endup being chaeaper, unless you find budy with wreaked truck and get good deal. I was going to do same swap and decided to sell truck and buy one with 6 speed, but then i started another progect, but decided to go with the nv4500 it is much cheaper.

If you're going to be doing a lot of racing, a built auto will be your best bet. Otherwise a handshaker is still my favorite

NV 4500s are bulletproof as long as you fix 5th gear the swap is worth it trust me I know

From what i have heard the 5th gear nut comes loose. I also have a 96 dodge cummins 12v and want to do the same tranny swap. from what i have read the nv4500's are bullet proof when you fix the 5th gear nut. I want to find a tranny but i have already been to most of my local junk yards and have came up dry.

The reason the nut comes loose is from shifting into 5th before you get up to speed yes they sell a fix its an updated nut that doesn't come loose. As I've said before find a wrecked truck minus the engine you need the trans ecm pedals column and guage cluster sell the remainder of the parts and your auto and you can usually break even on cost
