Default Silencer Ring Removal - Affecting CFM ?

I know everyone says removing the silencer ring does not affect anything... BUT.. is there actual study on this...

The HX35 is a really popular turbo on M50B25 and M20B25 BMW Turbo projects, and i have one guy telling me his dyno went down 18hp with removing the silencer ring?

I also know a older guy that pulls a trailer around a lot, he has pyro, boost and fuel press gauges in his truck, and he tells me EGTs dropped with removing it...

Is this fictional or real ???

Removing the silencer ring does not make any performance difference.

do you have any study to prove this... i know this is what everyone has to say on this topic BUT... having a dyno proven 18hp loss ?? and another person claiming EGT drops of around or over 100° ??

i want to see hard evidence !!!

I've always heard that Chrysler made Cummins put the silencer ring in there just to quiet it down. Big rigs and construction equipment don't have them. If it made that much of a difference you would think they would have them

The silencer ring will effect performance. The reason it gets louder when you take the ring out is because there is more turbulance in the airflow. The ring directs the air being rerouted from the mapwidth grove back into the the inducer smoother than not having it at all. I'm sure some of you have heard of "race covers" they are just a JD compressor cover that has a silencer ring permanetly mounted in them. Oh and they're also polished and shiny weee!

If it makes a big difference, why do aftermarket turbos not include them?

yeah and your headlight fluid is low too. that'll take 25 horsepower right there.

there's no dyno where i live but... i would be more than willing to dyno my truck to see if this is true...

i will however... refuse to drive around with my silencer in... a few horsepower.. vs cool whistle... i think my truck can really spare a few hp to coolness hehe...

but i think it's a interesting topic, now that i've seen a 18hp difference on the dyno sheet for that BMW...

anyone want to try this out next dyno event ???

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

BUT... why cooler EGT's with taking out the ring ?? anyone care to explain that ??

I saw on another forum that a guy lost 1/2 a hp and like 2ft/lb of torque in a 2nd gen 24v with the ring removed. The only other thing I've seen a silencer on besides pickups is on buses. I made the mistake of removing one on a diesel pusher with an 8.3 in it that had the ol 6 blade wheel. It was badass for the first couple miles then the coolness factor quickly disappeared.

BTW I wouldn't listen to a thing most of those bimmer guys have to say. There are a few good knowledgeable BMW guys out there but not many. I have an e34 and every BMW forum ive been on is mostly full of misinformed retards that migrated from a ricer civic into a cheap bimmer, kinda like they are migrating to diesels.

Chrysler had the silencer ring put on and it was only on the hx 35s hx 40s didn't have them they really don't affect much at all so little in fact you don't know the difference and what's 1/10 of a horse power if it does affect anything
