Default need help......

ok everyone...
my buddy is working on his 96 cummins. and he was wondering how to pull the cam out.. can anyone help out with this? because i have no idea what to tell him. because ive never messed with a cummins. "want one oneday though"...

you will have to take the whole front end of the truck apart, take the timing cover off, remove the rocker arms, remove the push rods, take the injection pump off, remove tappet cover, install 1/2" wooden dowels in the lifters and secure them in the up pos, remove cam retainer, pull the cam out, install tray to catch lifters if they fall, press the cam gear off, heat cam gear up and install it on the new cam, bolt the retainer on, drop the lifters into a tray not into the oil pan ( if you wanna change them), install new lifters ( time to go fishing 5 and 6 are a pain), remove tray, install the cam after its all lubed up,reinstall pushrods, tappet cover, ect

wow sounds like you have done this a few times, the front cover is off he just didnt know how to get the cam out. thanks for the info.

yep, just make sure to line the 00 and 0's up before you remove it, that way you put it back in the same way it came out

is your buddy swapping a stock cam or aftermarket?

dont forget to remove the lift pump too, had that snag me when i when tryin to pull the cam outta mine

haha its easy to forget about when ya got a block off plate in its place.

thats right, you will remember very quick when the cam won't come out
