stock head bolt trick?
i was told by one of the bigger diesel guys in my area to get brand new headbolts and one at a time take them out put in a new one and torque them first to 100-115-120-125-130-135-140-145-150-155 waiting 30 minutes after you torque them down every 5 lbs for allowing them to cool and he said hes seen strucks hold 800 hp on the stock ones torqued down like this has anyone heard of this??? i really dont want to loose a bolt in my head..... thanks

anyone else smell something funny? i've heard of moderately over-torqueing your head bolts as an alternative to studs if you arent going to running anything over 50 psi and more typically, 40 and below. Plus i was always under the assumption steady, continuous pressure while torquing is the best practice for any kind of torque. ever torque something to say... 150 foot pound with a nice steady pull? bump the torque by 5-10 ft pound and it'll click on your first pull with no head movement. once the bolt "rests" you then have to overcome the friction of all the threads and the surface area of the bolt heads shoulders. any torque to yield, or torque in increment specs i've seen jump in at the least 20-25 foot pound increments. now, initial torque of 50 to 100 following suggested pattern letting it "settle" then doing the final torque steady, constant pull would yield the most accurate results. atleast IMO

Yeah torquing in 5 pound increments is not going to do anything but stress the bolt a number of times. Now if you wanted to torque to 155 start at 100 then 125 then 155 for example. By doing it in 5 pound increments you are turning you bolts into torsion springs in a way to put a mental image in your head.
