Default governer spring

is there any way to tamper with the governor without purchasing the expensive springs? no body has come up with some use of hardware store springs or adjustments or anything of that nature? i know it seems like a dumb question because it really is, but its worth a shot...

some have put washers under the springs, but for 90 bucks, it aint worth not getting it just right imo.

I thought there was someone on DB that used washers or something. Ended up doing some major damage. Some claim it can be done, but 90 bucks for spings isn't that much.
