Default needs help

I have a 1998 dodge ram automatic. Today the rpm tach started to just bounce around and the transmission wont shift into overdrive. It was rebuilt about 3 years ago and I'm not very hard on it. Also when I let off of the pedle i can hear the engine still going at higher rpm's and after a bit it will go down. Can anyone give me a little advise, anything will help. Thanks

I'm not sure about your rpm guage, but as for the engine running at higher rpm's then dropping down,I'm thinking your throttle position sensor may need adjument.I think you can clean them to.
