Hi guys,

I'm kinda new to diesels since I've only had my Dodge 2500 for a couple of years. The truck is stalling on occasion when coming to a stop or slow turn. It will restart if I let it coast to a stop, wait a bit and then tromp on the accelerator while cranking the engine. My local diesel mechanic thinks it's the fuel shutoff valve since the truck "runs too good when it's running" We have not been able to get it to stall when he has it. So far, I haven't had the presence of mind to leave the key in the on position and check the position of the valve when it is stalled. Anyway, has anyone had a similar experience and can suggest a cause? The truck runs great otherwise.

What is your idle speed? Your idle could be adjusted too low. Here is the procedure to adjust the idle speed.

It could possibly be the solenoid is releasing. More than likely of a loose connection if it is. However without checking to see what position it is in when the truck stalls it is hard to say.

I would adjust the idle first and go from there.

 

We've set the idle up to around 800rpm. I will try disconnecting the solenoid connections and cleaning / inspecting everything this weekend. Thanks for the help.

pull the shut off solenoid off and put the lever in the up position by hand. go drive it and if it doesnt die than you know your problem is related to the shut off solenoid. and if it does die than you got a problem somewhere else

 

Is that 800 rpm in gear?


You could have a weak coil....but usually it will cause a hard start situation



Have you tried adjusting the solenoid?

I don't think it is the shut off solenoid. If it only seems to do it when your slowing down(engine returning to idle) or a slow turn(engine at idle or close to idle and the power steering pump is putting a load on the engine) I am betting it has to do with idle speed.


Correct speed is:

* 1994-1998 with AT - in drive with AC on 750 -800 RPM
* 1994-1998 with manual in neutral with AC on 750-800 RPM
* NOTE: These speeds may cause stalling when the engine is cold. If this is a problem for you, bump the idle speed to 900 RPM.
