Default tranny shafts?

i was wondering if i would need to swap shafts if i rebuild a 2 wheel drive 47re for my four wheel drive?

I think it's just the output thats different.

The back section is different.

6btsmoker's Sig:98 12v DDP delivery valves & injectors,#5 plate,4k gsk,21* timing,BD towing twins & ex manifold,5"exhaust,ARP studs,O-ringed head,and I can't remember all of it,and now a blown head gasket. Coming soon: .040 bore with new pistons,Hamilton Big Stick cam with Hamilton valve springs,Maxx Spool push rods,new head w/fire rings,Fluid Damper,SFI approved flex-plate,etc....

Tail housing and output are different.

PhilipR's Sig:-Phil-98 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4,12V,47RE Suncoast Billet input shaft, Suncoast H/D Extreme Trans kit, Goerend Triple disc converter, FASS 150/90, FASS Suction tube, Amsoil Ea air and pre-filter, 100 plate, 4K GSK, 370's, AFC Mods, CoolerTubz intake, 5" stacks, BD-SBS, Autometer Z-series Pyro/Boost/Trans/FP, Amsoil front to back.

AS posted, the tail housing and the output shaft are different, everything else is the same. You will need a press and some special tools to get the overdrive unit apart to swap the output shaft.

Diesel Nut's Sig:
1994 Reg Cab 5 speed 4x4
6" stacks, HX35, 370's, 181's, #5 plate, a bunch of timing and some gauges

The press tool is easy to make with a welder and some 3/8X1 flat stock.
I made one and used it in a trans shop for many years.

I left mine behind at the tranny shop so i cannot measure it.
Very easy to make.Two upright pcs connected to a cross piece in a "U" shape.
Very easy to figure the measurements once the OD shaft is out of the housing.

4" diameter, 3" ID at bottom, 5" tall.


Next, you will need an old intermediate shaft you can cut down to align the splines up when you put it back together. Without this you will never get the OD unit back on the transmission.
