Air filter choices

Air filter choices
I want to add a new performance air filter to my old 12 valve but am a little confused about all the numbers. Can anyone help me understand why they want so much $$$ for some of these "cold air kits"? What about using my standard air box with a K&N? It's MUCH cheaper...Why would I spend so much extra cash?

Well if you want to use the stock box i woul NOT put a K&N in there unless you want a new turbo shortly after. Amsoil makes probably the best drop in filter. The higher cost of most of those kits is because they come with piping, filter and a new box. Do a search for a BHAF and you'll get away with a lot cheaper "cold" air filter kit.

You can get just the AFE filter and stick it on the stock tube, same with the BHAF.

Also you'll be removing the box, and you'll have to make a heat shield if the heat bothers you but theirs a guy on here that makes heat shields for the BHAFs

Should I use the stock tube or is there room for improvement?

The AFE link provided shows three different filters. Two have a cone in the end which I assume is a good thing for more air flow but the most expensive one has no cone; why? Is there an advantage of one vs. another?
