Default NV 4500 Transmission Filter Kit

just bought a 96 Dodge Cummins 2WD and I need to change the gear oil in my NV 4500. I was looking at a filter kit from Genos Garage K1444 - MANUAL TRANSMISSION FILTER KIT-Dodge Cummins Diesel Truck Accessories – Geno’s Garage

Has anybody had any experience with this after-market filter? I had hoped the kit would include a magnetized plug and or part to it, but after calling Genos, I find it does not. The kit is $56.95 and there is a filter change that goes for $11.95 plus shipping.

All things considered, it seems like a filter would be a good idea. Your thoughts...?

Oh, does anyone have the correct part number for the GM equivalent NV 4500 gear oil? The one I had - 12346191, apparently has been discontinued? Dodge wanted $23.00 a quart! Yeow

Might go with Redline MT 90 or Amsoil MTG instead?

Regards,

Steve

Steve - the only oil I would use is the OEM Castrol Syntorque or the Amsoil equivalent.

I used Redline in my NV5600 (which is much less picky on oil) and now have a grind in third gear.

You need to use the proper oil here - anything else can damage the fiber synchros in your NV-4500. $23 a quart is a lot cheaper than a rebuild.

Thank you...I'm certainly old enough to remember the old adage, "Penny-wise and pound foolish!" Rather applicable here, eh? Any opine on the Geno after-market trans filter?

Steve

Im not a transmission expert but a filter definitely couldnt hurt.

Oh, check around at some Chevy dealers for the Syntorque (tell them its for the Chevy 5 speed) - price varies widely. As well, the AMSOIL stuff will be a whole lot cheaper - around $12 a litre or so.
