tried something real cool today, even though im still buzzing from the fumes. i went and got a gallon of polysester fiberglass resin and coated my whole headliner. of course i took it out of the truck. after the second coat i have a sweet shell of a headliner. im gonna spray bomb it with that truck liner in a can so i dont have sand and prep all the imperfections in the resin after it dried. when im all done ill post some pics. i had about 45 bucks in it and i even did the sun visors too. just passing it along. oh and while im at it i also went to the local lumber store and bought that ice dam membrane for the roof valley and used it to seal my floorboards. it has a adhesive backing and a vinyl top barrier. after i applied it i used a heat gun to bond it to itself. i also ordered a vinyl molded floor to drop in for 127.00. let me know if anyone wants to tackle this themselves.

wow that was alot of work. it came out pretty nice, looks factory but it is a hard shell and fairly flexible. i didnt crack it putting it in. i sprayed it with 3m rubberized underbody and it stinks like hell. basically it looks like a bedliner, but i dont have to worry about the headliner coming apart anymore and what the hell its a truck not a pimpmobile.

you could coat it with resin then sand it down and paint it real nice...that basically how they make the high end speaker boxes in these show cars

the dome light the rear plugs and the clothes hanger hooks as well as the center console all hold it up there. it really doesnt weigh that much. remember i just used about a three quarts of resin and 2 cans of rubberized underbody. i used the existing padded fleece headliner as my media instead of fiberglass mat. the liner itself is a molded pressboard with the padded fleece glued to it, so its formed which helps it support itself. i wasnt too sure about the visors but what the hell it worked. the worst part so far is this damn vinyl floor, what a pain the arse

if you do this dont use a brush to apply the first coat. use a plastic spreader to get the resin into the foam padding. you can brush the second coat. the rate i used was 2 quarts first coat and a quart for the second coat. i used the rubberized paint so i could hide the imperfections.
you can sand and use a filler then paint shiny but thats is alot of work and b.s. i bought a gallon of resin at napa for 38.00 and three cans of 3m rubberized underbody for under 20.00 it stinks but ive heard it takes about a week or so to go away or get used to whichever comes first. i guess you can use whatever you want to paint over if odor is an issue |
