Default P7100 injector pump timing help

So I have been looking around to try and figure out how to time my pump and can't find any instructions or decent pics. If anyone knows where I can get some directions it would really help because I would like to know how to do it on my own. Also what are the less common tools I'm needing to do the job?

Hey there...welcome to the site

Heres a decent how-to guide:

TSB 18-10-94 Rev. A

As for tools, you will need a metric dial indicator, a means of holding the dial indicator, a delivery valve socket, a magnet, and a barring tool (if you dont have a barring tool, you can usually turn the engine over backwards with a breaker bar and 7/8" socket on the alternator pully nut.

Heres the tools:

Miller 6860: Miller Special Tools 6860 Cummins Diesel Timing Kit OTCMLR-6860 -= that doesnt include everything, you still need the indicator

Snap-on SP-500: SP500, Set, Diesel Timing Gauge You still need the barring tool here

So it looks like it might be worth it to take it to the shop to do it since I think they quoted $120 to do it since the tools cost $400+ Would timing it be a one time thing or would I likely have to re-time it for more mods in the future. I plan on getting as much power as i can without having to buy a new turbo to support the air-flow to reduce EGT's. So I would like as much power as I can get with having good EGT's.

I could only go to about 1k degrees with the plate pushed almost full forward and my BHAF stock straight pipe and no other mods. I haven't ran it yet with it full forward and with adjusting the gov arm and star wheel because I'm missing a Tcase :'( but I will be getting that next week.

What else can I put on it to pump up the power and stay in a decent range with EGT's? injectors? how big? delivery valves? how big? any other ideas?

My 5 inch straight will be here next week also

The timing doesnt really give you much of a performance bump but it does make the truck run better. Most guys have it set at 15.5-16 degrees.

It should be a one time thing as long as they make sure the clean the pump shaft with brake cleaner so that there is not oil residue and that they torque it enough. I think the spec in the book isnt enough, thats why the timing tends to slip. I believe the torque is 150 ft-lbs.

Yes, having a shop do it is advisible....but only if you ask enough questions to be sure they actually know what they are doing. Ask them how many theve done etc. They can screw things up pretty bad if they dont know what they are doing.

You might be able to get away with the 4k GSK springs (are you aware that you will need HD valve springs?)....not sure how much more you can do with the stock turbo. What fuel plate do you have?

Well DDP has a shop about 20 min away so I think they know how to do it right most likely. I'm not sure which plate I have I got it from DDP I thought it said 002 on it when I had it out and was trying to figure out how to tune my AFC. would it be a decent idea to put in delivery valves? When I ran it last it had the plate almost FF and no star wheel adj. Now I moved the gov arm closer to the tip of the plate and scewed with star wheel and pushed the plate the last little bit forward (it might have been FF before because of how little it moved if at all) Since it doesn't have a tcase in it for another week I'm not able to drive it but when I slam the pettle to the floor from an idle it seams to load up a little bit in the middle then clear up top and it only smokes a little. Do I have the AFC out of tune? (it is FF also) Or is that loading up ok? Or do they all load up like that?

thats pretty much it for cheap cheats but if you wanna invesst in some governor springs it would help 3k's run about $120 and later add injectors or if you can afford them I would go ahead and get them. After those couple parts it will smoke more than you want it to!

Hello Rallyit67: I tried to PM you but I'm just a Diesel Bomber rookie having just bought a 1996 12V. Apparently, you have to have a requisite 10 posts in order to ask another member a PM question?

What shop gave you the $120.00 timing quote? DDP, in Monroe, is not to far from Edmonds, yet they were the same guys that "forgot" to mention the Killer Dowel Pin on my pre-purchase check list? Did DDP do your timing? Thanks.

Regards,

Steve

BTW: If, by chance, one of the esteemed senior Bomber members with more than the obligatory 10 posts would forward this in a copy/paste PM directly to Rallyit67, I'd appreciate it! Thanks
