Default 12 Valve Shuttering

I am new to the cummins but have had a lot of stroker fixes.

I have a 96 cummins and the original turbo failed. So of course I replaced it with a bigger one, an aurora 3000. I also replaced the injectors with 270's, removed the air box and installed a stage 2 afe. The exhaust was already 4" from the previous owner. The truck has 190000 on it. When I started it the engine runs smooth at idle but if you give it fuel the engine shutters and pukes black and then white smoke. Through these forums I learned about the fuel plate and ground it to a #10, slid it 1/16" back from full forward and slid the cover all the way forward. Didn't make much difference with the shuttering and smoke issues, infact may have made it a little worse. If you hold the throttle it one position everything clears up, but if you give it more the engine shutters again and blows the black followed by the white smoke.

Timing maybe?

i'm thinking fuel supply. i'm hoping too that you are letting the truck warm up to operating temp before reving it. my 96 wants to pop and studder if it isn't at operating temp.

when was the last time the fuel filter was changed?

could be that, the overflow valve or the lift pump dying.....

did you mess with the timing? yeah i would check your filters and check your fuel pressure if the filter change doesnt clear it up

I'm not sure on the fuel filter but I will change it next.

When I take the truck out it doesn't seem to do the strange shuttering and white smoke bit. Just a lot of black for the first part of acceleration but clears up with boost. Seems to only do it in park with no load.

Yes the truck still does it after good and warm, and no I didn't touch the timing.

On another note with all the up grades to the stock engine, HOLY CRAP!!! I am very impressed with the way the truck runs. Used to take about 15 mins to accel at 60 mph to 70, now I press the pedal and it lays you back in the seat and the speedo climbs very rapid...I think I pooped my pants a little.

I would guess timing slipped a bit maybe??

Don't forget to clean out that pesky pre-filter that is part of the fuel heater. i cleaned mine with every fuel filter change. That screen can cause some odd fueling issues.
