Default Turbo & Fuel Plate Suggestions

Hey Gang- this is my first thread regarding a new toy! My 2004 Excursion with a 97' 12 Valve needs some help putting out a few more horses. I think I need a upgraded Fuel Plate (currently stock with no mods or adjustment) as well as an upgraded turbo. This is a toy- but I don't want her to be a dragster. The X will occasionally tow a Polaris RZR on a trailer but will mostly be a road cruiser. I would like to see 450-500 hp but I don't want to lose reliability or mileage (if I can manage my foot). As per my sig- the motor has plenty of supportive mods.

so it doesn't have studs? that would be my first mod, whats the timing at? as for a plate ditch it and get afc live from power driven diesel. fuel plates are a waste of time and a thing of the past. do all the afc mods and get a max travel kit with your afc live. as for turbos there are a million options but you will either need a t3 internally wastegated borg warner. probably like a sxe 362, also a turbo you can get from power driven diesel and they have a sale right now. but you will need it to have a 3rd gen style comp cover to fit in place of the He351, which they do have. you could also get your he351 built by a couple companies out there and have it fitted with larger comp and turbine wheels. that will keep it very tow friendly, insure its a direct fit, not cost an arm and a leg because you have the turbo and just need it modified etc. theres a place called tater built, and insta spool (also known as savage fabrication on instagram) insta spool is his internet store name. they both have great reputations for building turbos. and will get you to the 400-500 range. but timing will be a deciding factor. since that power can't be made on low timing with a small turbo, so to get that power on a more towing friendly turbo you will need around 20+ degrees of timing. or start thinking about compounds.

on the post. seriously.......

how is the man suppose to tune his truck? these are mechanical.

number 6 fuel plate
62/65/14 turbo
.024 DV's
5x12 injectors
4k governor springs
60 lbs valve springs
washer flip mods in your afc

GAUGES!!!!!!!!!!!
pyro
boost
fuel pressure

these babies are your three best friends. impossible to do much tuning without them.

you will have to tune your truck. that is the entire point of the afc. which is the smoke screw, star wheel and fuel plate kinda thingermajigs that some people want you to throw away. on a very similar list of thing done I did 429hp and 960 lbs tq.
head studs are nice and recommended but honestly not needed if you leave your timing alone and or don't turn much more than 3000 rpms. IF you do much timing mighty diesel head bolts or arp studs work great. stay below 20* if your gonna pull anything.

Cheers

your 90 HP injectors are 5x12's
I wouldn't modify your he351cw. they are good little chargers worth aprox 400 safe hp but get hot and simply not worth modifying. measurements are 60/60/9 same compressor wheel as an hx40.

You tune with afc live, an In cab tuner built by power driven diesel. Fuel plates are extinct, and out dated. And the tuner tunes everything from in cab as well as fuel plates in general are a waste of money. 100$ for a plate you can cut your self no thanks. And a he351cw is a very stout turbo for a factory unit and definitely worth modifying, tell fleece making nearly 800hp now? On a 64/65 he351, this guys Ford was built with a he351 in it. Why buy a s300 with a front facing cover usually and extra 40-100$ and a he351 flange another 50-100$ plus a 1200-1800$ turbo for a usable size in his range. Probably a sxe s362/68 .80 internally gated t3 from power driven diesel so you don't get ripped off by some big name company. When he has a truck set up for an he351, which is a fantastic tow turbo, fastest spooling turbo and can be built and modified by an independent company I mentioned for 650-1000$ and fit directly in place. No brainer to me.

62/65 turbos are wayyyy outdated as well and if you purchase one your getting ripped off. Look into new turbo technology like the sxe line. if you decide to not modify the he351, but honestly it's your cheapest, easiest and most effectively bet for the 450-500 you want.

I clearly temember why i quit helping folks on here. And its due to the geniuses that bash everyone and must know everything. Never mind that some of us build turboes for a livng. Never mind that and he351 has extremely small enternals. Good charger but 800hp? Lol giggle gas anyone. Hillarious to say the least. Be careful where you get your help from Mr. Original poster. Your in the midts of keyboard heroes and crummy running trucks. Lol

Peace

Coming from someone who still uses fuel plates and suggests 15 year old turbo technology I think you have it a bit backwards. A 62/65 was cool in like 2004. And a built he351 has been know to do plenty. And will make his easy 4-500. Not everyone needs to buy some industrial injection junk.

I think the main reason you should quit helping folks in because your irrelevant in the knowledge base of today. Yes 800 horse, and thus why the question mark. It might be mid to high sevens in a common rail truck. If you were up to date on your knowledge you'd know this. You'd know a 62/65 is a joke, you'd know that anyone wanting to spend their money wisely while making tuning easier and more effecient use afc live. You'd know about the sxe line of turbos, but you don't. You know how to make 400hp 10 years ago. Things have changed.
